Thursday: "The committee on free bridges reported, through Christie Benet, thai the Colombia Mills Cjmpany had subscribed $200 to assist the work of the committee to get the freeholders o! Columbia township to sign a petition for an election on tne maimer ui providing for the purchase cf the rivei bridges leading into Columbia. Mr. Benet reported that there are in rouud numbers about 3,000 freeholders or property owners in the township. Within the last two weeks there have been 459 additional namej signed, and the total to date is 1,444. The committee wishes to add at least 200 names, as that the petition will not fall short of the required number when the county commissioners c.iecb over the names on the petition. Mr. Bsnet stated that 80 per cent, of the persons approached had readily signed the petitions. The sentiment of the voters at large?as disti gui-hed from the freeholders?is ab >ut 75 per cent; favorable to the proposition to buy the present bridges or to baiid new ones if reasonable prices can not be had on the Congaree and Broad river bridges. It will be seen from the above that Colombia has taken definite action. It is now up to Lexington to do htr ya^t. and the people are willii g to set. The Lexington delegation has intormed us that they are willing to meet with tie Columbia Chamber of Commerce ani all parties concerned, to discus i the matter and de"vi9e some puu whereby Lexington may do her part. This should set at case the feeling of unrest among our people, for the freeing of these bridges seems to be the chief grounds upon which our peopl want to annex to Richland. Now, let all concerned get together snd take some definite steps at once. There has been enough talk about the matter to free a thousand bridges.
