(Deferred Editorial.) It was the editor's pleasure, or. Tuesday of last week, to visit, the beautiful and growing city of Newberry. We had often passed by rail, but this was our first visit to the city proper. We have often heard it said that "Newberry was one of the b?.-st towns in South Carolina," and we certainly found that statement true. We are almost presuaded to venture a little further and say that Newberry is the best town in South Carolina. Here you find large stores?all of them "a filled with stocks of merchandise from J floor to ceiling?bubbling over with the season's newest and best. Her public buildings are indeed a credit to "] the city and county. The residences J are handsome in design, many of them being the equal of the finest residences in some of the larger cities. Her 1 churches are edifices that are calcu- J lated to make the congregations proud and inspire the pastors in their work. Her two cotton mills, running r on full time, employing a large force J: of hands, and paying handsome dividends to their stockholders, There are a number of other enterprises, all of which adds life to the city and makes business good the year around. The streets and side walks are paved, city-like, and are well kept, X many improvements being made in their appearance from time to time. We predict that street cars will be running in Newberry ere many more years. Newberry has a fine power plant, which not only furnishes light for the town, but for a number of enterprises ? It is here that Newberry College is located, the pride of Lutherans everywhere. There is no denom- ( inational college in the south that has % turned out more useful men?men who stand high in all the walks of life. m Newberry is proud of her college, it is ~~ the idol of her people, and no oppor- _ tunity is allowed to pass to advance z her progress. B We found the merchants and busi- I ness men to be all clever and polite I gentlemen, full of' pluck and energy I and enjoying prosperity. Her banks I are strong, with ample funds to supply the demands of the patrons, and are officered by sound, trusted and successful financiers. While in Newberry we visited the sanctumns of Brother Wallace, of The Observer, and Brother Aull, of The Herald and News. Both of the? e gentlemen have well equipped offices and get out excellent semi-weeklies. There are no better papers in South Carolina than those edited by Messrs. Wallace and Aull. This city of about 8,000 inhabitants is steadily forging to the front?growing in enterprises and in inhabitents. Surrounded by one of the best farming sections in South Carolina, it is destined to become a great city at no distant future. We met many of our friends, who made us feel at home, and whose generous hospitality we enjoyed to the fullest extent. The Editor of The I Dispatch hopes to visit this hustling | little city again in the near future, g when, it is hoped, we will have more I time to view the general surroundings I of the city, and meet more of her I people.
