While country life has gained socially in many ways it has also losl in large measure some social features which were the joy of young people in former days. Thirty or more years ago, and less than that in some sections, spelling bees, singing schools, debating societies and other similar doings were numerous, affording untold pleasure and no small benefit, They made a needful break in ordinary routine of farm life, and today many look back longingly to the times of their youth when merry parties of young people, after the days work was oyer, drove to the country school to hear or take part in singing, debating questions, or in spelling one another down. Country life today, socially and in other ways, is unquestionably better than it was, and books, papers and other material are now plentiful in the farm home as once they were scarce. Still it is doubtful if any of the young people of today get more genuine satisfaction out of the advantages they possess, than their fathers, and mothers got in their youth from the social doings which brightened a long winter night.?Exchange. Soldier Balks Death Plot It seemed to J. A. Stone, a civil war veteran, of Kemp, Tex., that a plot existed between a desperate lung trouble and the grave to cause his death "I contracted a stubborn cold," he writes "that developed a cough that stuck to me in spite of all remedies, for years. My weight ran down to 130 pounds. Then I began to use Dr. King^s New Discovery, which restored my health completely. I now weigh 178 pounds." For severe Colds, obstinate Coughs, Hemorrhages, Asthma, and to prevent Pneumonia it's unrivaled. 50c. and $1.00. Trial bottle free. When the busy day is ever with its anxious hopes and fears, And the telephone stops ringing arid the last clerk disappears With a sigh I lean back weary in my swinging office chair, ( And my thoughts go back to childhood and the old farm that is there. I can see the dear old homstead, I broad and low, beneath the tree9, And the row of shining milkpan9 sunning in the fresh, sweet breeze; I can see the barn and horses, and I the orchard on the hill, ? Where we gathered golden pippins for the old straw cider mill. ' I can see the upland pastures dotted o'er with grazing sheep, And the wheat field waving golden, ready for the men to reap. I can see the old stone fences where the chipmunks used to play, And the cornfield, and the meadow with its piles of fragrant hay. } I can see the cattle standing neath the { willows of the brook , Where I used to fish for minnows with a bent pin for a hook; And the pond where grew the lillie3 that my mother used to prize; Ah, the light of heaven's shining now within those dear old eyes. And I sigh while fancy lingers o'er each well-known pleasant scene i Of the happy days of boyhood thrown by memory on the scene; i And I'd give all I have gained since, 1 all my wealth and treasures rare, To go back again to childhood and the old farm that is there. ?Selected. 1 If your liver is 8luggi3h and out of tone and you feel dull, bilious, constipated, take a dose of Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets tonight before retiring and you will feel all right in the morning.
