While country life has gained socially in many ways it has also losl in large measure some social features which were the joy of young people in former days. Thirty or more years ago, and less than that in some sections, spelling bees, singing schools, debating societies and other similar doings were numerous, affording untold pleasure and no small benefit, They made a needful break in ordinary routine of farm life, and today many look back longingly to the times of their youth when merry parties of young people, after the days work was oyer, drove to the country school to hear or take part in singing, debating questions, or in spelling one another down. Country life today, socially and in other ways, is unquestionably better than it was, and books, papers and other material are now plentiful in the farm home as once they were scarce. Still it is doubtful if any of the young people of today get more genuine satisfaction out of the advantages they possess, than their fathers, and mothers got in their youth from the social doings which brightened a long winter night.?Exchange. Aiken, Aug. 21?The Lutherans of this city have got together and built them a neat little church on Pendleton street. All the fixtures have been installed and only a small amount of the inside work remains to be completed. The dedication exercises will take place on Sunday, September 5th. The Rev. Mr. FInck, pastor of St. Mattews Lutheran church in Augusta will assist the pastor, Rev. J. B. Derrick, at the dedication exercises. Woman Finds Snake in Bed. Mrs. John McKnight, of Shartles ville, Pa., had an experience with a black snake which she is not likely tc forge: for sometime. The family retired as usual and wThen Mrs. McKnight had been in bed but a shorl time she heard a peculiar noise baci of her pillow. Thinking it was an insect of some kind she thought no more of the matter and went to sleep. She had jus fallen into a doze when she felt a pe culiar sensation on her face. Reach ing up to her forehead she was horri tied to find a snake crawling over he: face. Grabbing it, with a shriek she hurl ed the reptile across the room. Aris ing, she found the snake lying in j corner of the room and killed it wit! a cane. The snake measured thre< feet, four inches in length. One Young Man Kills Another in Langley N. H. Hamlet, a youiug operative i the Langley mill, Aiken county, sho ' and killed John Rhoden, anothe young man, at six o'clock Wednesda morning iu the park near the miil Hamlet claims he shot in self-defense but the circumstances indicate tnar n waylaid Rhoden and shot him froi behind a tree. Rhoden and a brothe of Hamlet had had a difficulty th night before. i i THE OLD FAPv2?.
