"Mr. Lever is the friend of the newspaper man, and all of the Southern press boys know there will be something worth uniting about when he is around. He likes the newspaper men, and they are fond of him. He has never reached the state when he felt too proud to come out of the House when sent for and say that he had x^o news when asked for it if he had none. The parents of Ned and Brack Toland, the young negro men under sentence to be hanged at Lexington the first day of May for the murder of Mrs. Ellisor at Cayce the 26th of February, are Jack and Lizzie Toland, who live on the Brown & Moseley place near Prosperity. The parents are good negroes and have always borne good reputations. When they were set free they were the slaves of Col. and Mrs. John S. Renwick, of this county, and Mrs. Renwick, the old mistress, is still living. The younger of the boys was never known to be guilty of crime before this, and many think that he was drawn into it by his brother, who has borne a bad reputation for sometime. One cannot help feeling sorry for the parents of the boys so soon to hang.? Newberry Observer. Kodol for Dyspepsia has helped thousands of people who have had stomach trouble. This is what one man says of it: "E. C. DeWitt & Co., Chicago, 111: ?Gentlemen? In 1897 1 had a disease of the stomach and bowels. I could not digest any thing I ate and in the spring of 1902 I bought a bottle of Kodol and the benefit I received from that bottle all the gold in Georgia could not buy. I still use a little occasionally as I find it a fine blood purifier and a good tonic. May you live long and prosper. Yours very truly, C. N. Cornell, Roding, Ga., Aug. 27,1906." Kaufmann Drug Co. To those who say the county dispensary plan of selling liquor i9 the most Democratic solution of the whiskey quejtion, we cite the North Augusta figures in the recent Aiken county election. Of the 157 voters in North Augusta, 54 favor the dispensary and 103 oppose it. In spite of this great majority, two to one, a dispensary has been saddled upon that community. It was not on the field of battle, It was not with a ship at sea, ) But a fate far worse than either That stole him away from me. 'Twas the death in the tempting winecup That the reason and senses drown; He drank the alluring poison, And thus my boy went down. Down from the heights of manhood To the depths of disgrace and sin; Down to a worthless being, From the hope of what might haye been. For the brand of a beast besotted He bartered his manhood's crown; Through the gate of a sinful pleasure My poor, weak boy went down. 'Tis only the same old story That mothers so often tell, With accents of infinite sadness, Like the tones of a funeral Dell; But I never thought, once, when I heard it, I should learn all its meaning myself; I thought he'd be true to his mother, I thought he'd be true to himself. But alas! for my hopes, all delusion! Alas! for his youthful pride! Alas! who are safe when danger Is open on every side? Oh, can nothing destroy this great evil?
