The Lexington Dispatch. Wednesday, April 10.1907. Susards Lead to Discovery of Negro's Body. One of the most horrible and revolt-, ine crimes ever committed in the annals of crime in South Carolina, \ was perpetrated in the county of Barnwell last Wednesday, when a negro, by the name of Stokes, was killed by a man giving his name as Dr. Jeems and claiming to be an Indian "doctor." It seems from what - can be gathered that the man was in Allendale, accompanied "by a negro woman, whom the "doctor" claimed was his wife. They went to the home of Stokes and appealed to him to take them in his wagon to Barnwell, to which Stokes agreed. The three left for Barnwell, but when Stokes did not return to Allendale his people became suspicious of foul play, and a hunting party was organized. They traced the wagon With the three occupants to within about three miles of Barnwell, when all trace was lost. TOey were 101a that the wagon was seen to turn off there in the direction of a swamp and return with but two of the party, the Indian ''doctor" and the woman. Stokes was missing. For a week negroes and whites searched for the negro, some expecting to find him possibly alive, while others searched for his body. On Thursday the attention of some parties was attracted to a large number of buzzards hovering over the swamp, - near where Stokes was last seen, some distance from the road. Upon investigation a badly decomposed body was found, afterwards identified as that of Stokes, the buzzards having eaten all the flesh off the bones. \ The "doctor," his wife^ and the mule and wagon have not been found, but diligent search is being made for their whereabouts. The negro, Stokes, was quiet, industrious and inoffensive, and had the respect of the white people of that section. te.- v . T * ' Sow's This? It is declared that the "Hear3t-HarrimanRockefeller combination has already a fund of $5,000,000 with which to carry on its campaign in opposition to the president. It was further au thoritatively said: "They are gathering up the loose ends, but the movement will flatten out. It is apparent in Ohio and Pennsylvania; in fact it extends across the entire continent. The scheme was thoroughly divulged at a recent dinner and reached the white house through ? friend of the ^resident's. Her advice I Geld ia South Carolina. From figures prepared and issued last week by the United States geological survey, South Carolina produced in 1905, 4,601 ounces of gold, equivalent $95,111, and 111 fine ounces of silver, valued at $67. This represents a decrease of $26,689 in gold and $225 in silver, as compared with the figures of 1904. Two deep mines contributed to the production, treating a total of 19,493 tons of ore, with in average of 1.92 of gold (with very little silver) per ton, No placer mines were operated in the state, nor was any lead, copper or zinc produced. The southern gold belt traverses the state from northeast to soutwest, and the following counties usually show some production: Abbeville, Anderson, Cherokee, Chesterfield, Greenville, Greenwood, Lancaster, Laurens, Oconee, Pickens, Spartanburg, Union and York.
