Sidney Smith cut the following from a newspaper and preserved it for himself: "When you rise in the morn- J ing, form a resolution to make the day a happy one to a fellow creature. It is easily done. A left-off garment j[ to the man who needs it, a kind word . to the sorrrowful, an encourrging expression to the striving, trifles in 1 themselves as light as air, will do at = least for the twenty-four hours. And, ( if you are young, depend upon it, it will tell when you are old; and, if you are old, rest assured it will send ^ you gently and happily down the stream of time to eternity. By the most simple arithmetical sum, look ^ at the result. If you send one person, ^ only one, happily through each day, that is three hundred and sixty-five ^ during the year. Supposing you live c forty years only after you commence ^ this course of medicine, you have made 14,600 beings happy atall events for a time." A child may be troublesome in many j ways without deserving punishment. We must always bear in mind the t good of the child, and our form of ^ government must not be neglectful of the child's true interest in our great efforts to make his behavior conform r to our moods and the requirements of society. We punish severely when the child throws a ball and breaks a window, or turns over a chair, or spills his milk; but we pass over the malice, revenge or cupidity that we * find creeping out now and then. Small, playful errors are committed 8 sometimes under the influence of a youthful spirits,^ with no bad inten- v tion whatever on the part of the child. This should not be treated gravely as a moral issue; we should discriminate a between playful acts and their ^ motives; we should strive to make our training instil ideas of truth, of a humanity, and let him see that in the v degree he practices these maxims in his daily life he will be regarded as good or bad.?American Farmer. i Tyner's Dyspepsia Remedy.
