"There is no beautifier of complexion, or form, or behavior, like the wish to scatter joy and not pain around us. 'Tis good to give a stranger a meal, or a night's lodging. 'Tis better to be hospitable to his good meaning and thought, and give courage to a companion. We must be as courteous to a man as we are to a picture, which we are willing to give the advantage of a good light." A good sermon needs no text. A quaint preacher once said that "Cilicia 3 TT.na onftliorll frvt* itllU. rampujfiia nao gwu vuvugxi a text if a preacher had a good sermon. Then often the text is better and bigger than the sermon. The above quotation from Emerson is a good text and any thoughtful reader can get much out of it. Take the last thought in it?"We must be as courteous to a man as we are to a picture." We place the picture in this light and in that until we get it in the best place. We first look for merits and we soon see so much excellence in it that the faults are all hidden. We turn man about until he shows up in the worst light possible. We see nothing but the faults and we glory in the fact that we are able to see them. During this Lenten season let us turn men and women about and place them in the best possible light. Let us contemplate their goodness and kindness and ^gentleness and forget that they have any faults. It will help us to eliminate some of the dark shadows in our own life, if we are always looking for light and beauty and excellence in others.?Carolina Spartan. The first radical announcement made by the new dispensary commission, which is closing up the business, came Thursday afternoon, when it ? * * *? i a \ i. was stated tnat salaries naa oeeu cut down in the state institution from $3,215 a month to $1,137, effective at once, and going through all departments. They have appointed three stock-takers who will work under oath, and whose figures will be verified, before the auditing company representatives go over and check up all accounts. A call has been issued for all claims against the State dispensary to be proved and presented not later than March 12th. i Mortgage Snatched from Man's Hand. Anderson, S. C., Feb. 20.?Yesterday Mr. G. W. Laboon was sent to the Brogon mill village to foreclose a mortgage given by a Mr. Vanidore to the Brogon Mills store on some household goods for supplies. Mr. Laboon found Mrs. Vanidore at home and advised her that he intended to foreclose the mortgage. She snatched the mortgage from his hands and tore it into bits. Mr. Laboon returned tc the city without accomplishing his mission. Neglected Golds Threaten Life [From the Chicago Tribune.] " 'Don't trifle with a cold,' is good advice for prudent men and women. It may be vital in the case of a child. Proper food, good ventilation, and dry, warm clothing are the proper safeguards against colds, If they are maintained through the changeable weather of autumn, winter and spring, the chances of a sui-pri.se from ordinary colds will be slight. But the ordinary light cold will become severe if neglected, and a well established ripe cold is to the germs of diptheria what honey is to the bee5 The greatest menance to child life at this season of the year is the neglected cold." Whether it is a child or adult, the cold slight or severe, the ^ery best treatment that can be adopted is to give Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. It is safe and sure. The great popularity and immense sale of this preparation has been attained by its remarkable cures of this ailment. A cold never results in pneumonia when it is given. For sale by Kaufmann Drug Co. Take No Substitute. ? ? db*VV*U.*Ug *W* HMw m There is one problem that dominates the home, an obtrusive, pervasive problem that ofttimes fills the whole horizon of life, one that, like Banquo's ghost "will not down"; it is the everpresent question of home financing. When we have mastered the "to have," the problem of the "to hold" confronts us. It. is the question of providing for the home which can never be properly answered until we realize that "provide." is a verb that should ever be conjugated in two tenses?present and future. There is in our American life, too often, a blind optimism in living up to an income, in assuming that because the sun of prosperity shines warmly today there is no need of providing umbrellas for a possible rainy to-morrow. Those who wisely live within an income rarely have to face the problem of trying to live without one. There are two simple guaranties against future poverty and dependence on others, two great safeguards for home and family?a bank-book and and an insurance policy. He says: "After taking less than thre.e bottles oi i Electric Bitters, I feel like one rising from the grave. My trouble is Bright's disease, in the Diabetes stage. The women of the South are models for the world. Last summer when the wheat harvest time was upon the farmers there was a scarcity of laborers, and two brave, sensible young women in Tennessee said to their father that they would drive the reapers. The offer was accepted and these two ladies saved the wheat crop. They did the work cheerfully and received the commendation of all the men and women of that locality.
