We must be as courteous to a man as we are to a picture, which we are willing to give the advantage of a good light." A good sermon needs no text. The above quotation from Emerson is a good text and any thoughtful reader can get much out of it. Take the last thought in it?"We must be as courteous to a man as we are to a picture." We place the picture in this light and in that until we get it in the best place. We first look for merits and we soon see so much excellence in it that the faults are all hidden. We turn man about until he shows up in the worst light possible. We see nothing but the faults and we glory in the fact that we are able to see them. During this Lenten season let us turn men and women about and place them in the best possible light. Let us contemplate their goodness and kindness and ^gentleness and forget that they have any faults. It will help us to eliminate some of the dark shadows in our own life, if we are always looking for light and beauty and excellence in others.?Carolina Spartan. The first radical announcement made by the new dispensary commission, which is closing up the business, came Thursday afternoon, when it ? * * *? i a \ i. was stated tnat salaries naa oeeu cut down in the state institution from $3,215 a month to $1,137, effective at once, and going through all departments. They have appointed three stock-takers who will work under oath, and whose figures will be verified, before the auditing company representatives go over and check up all accounts. A call has been issued for all claims against the State dispensary to be proved and presented not later than March 12th. i Mortgage Snatched from Man's Hand. Anderson, S. C., Feb. 20.?Yesterday Mr. G. W. Laboon was sent to the Brogon mill village to foreclose a mortgage given by a Mr. Vanidore to the Brogon Mills store on some household goods for supplies. Mr. Laboon found Mrs. Vanidore at home and advised her that he intended to foreclose the mortgage. She snatched the mortgage from his hands and tore it into bits. Washington,Feb. 20.?The postoffice appropriation bill, the largest ever reported from the committee on postoffices and postroads, passed the house today. All the provisions relating to increase pay affecting 90 per cent of the postal employes which yesterday were stricken out on points of order were today restored to the bill. Seven grades of clerks are established in first and second class offices with salaries ranging ffom $600 to $1,200. Deserted Familv and Hilled to Train. Anderson, S. C., Feb. 23.?A telegram has been received here saying that Monroe Cromer had been killed by a passenger train of the Southern railway in Danville, Va. Cromer left Anderson on Jan. 15, deserting his young wife and two small children. He was a mill operative. His wife and children and his mother are all , living in the Brogon mill village. He was about 23 years of age. Rising from the Grave. A prominent manufacturer, Wm, A. Fertwell, of Lucama, N. C., relates a most remarkable experience. While walking the i Columbia, Newberry and Laurens railroad trestle, which crosses the Co? lumbia canal and Congaree river, neai ! Elmwood cemetery, he lost his bal; ance and fell 50 feet into the canal > and bogged up several feet in the mud i f.3n feet below the surface of the water. He extricated himself from the mud and swam ashore and walked , home in good shape after "thawing" out at a good fire near the scene of his troubles. Nolle, Modest Girls. Last summer when the wheat harvest time was upon the farmers there was a scarcity of laborers, and two brave, sensible young women in Tennessee said to their father that they would drive the reapers.
