The Smith resolution destroying the State dispensary was agreed to by a majority of two. The following new bills in the Senate of interest : Mr. Weston?A bill to created commission' on annual encampment for Confederate veterans. Mr. Westpn?To regulate express companies in this State. Mr. Blease (by request)?A bill to grovide in what places cigarettes may e smoked or used. Mr. Blease?A bill to prescribe the manner in which concealed weapons shall be carried on the person. Mr. McGowan?A joint resolution authorizing and directing the attorney general to institute and prosecute actions against the several State treasurers and their sureties for the recoy ery of loss to the State by reason of loss of securities from the office of the State treasurer. Senator Blease?A bill to prohibit the sale of cigarettes and cigarette papers. Thursday in the House. Mr. Nicholson?To amend section 633 relative to the killing of deceased animals and prevention of cruelty to animals. Mr. McArthur?To require the State to reimburse J. T. White for horses killed by the State veterinarian. Mr. Wyche?To prohibit the manufacture or sale of adulterated or misbrandect or poisonous or deleterious foods or drugs. Dr. Saye?To enlarge the area of the school district of Y orkville to two miles. Mr. Legare?To authorize the chairman of boards of township commissioners in the several eounties to administer .paths in connection with the conductrof their offices. Mr. Ayer?To provide for the trans portation of troops in this State by the railroad companies at one cent per mile. > Mr. Derham?To provide for an in gnranee department in the State. .Mr. Rucker?To require railroad companies to build and maintain sidings, spur tracks, etc., further than now provided for. Mr. Doar?To give the police of cities and towns the right to arrest parties for violation of laws not now j within the jurisdiction of the city or j town police. Mr. Clary?To provide for pay for coroner's juries. A , mob quietly met the train bearing : Henry Bell, the negro accused of rape and who was being taken there over- j , powered the sheriff, hustled the ne- j gro down the track to a railroad bridge and strung him up. Smith, a ; mill operative employed at Watta ' mills, located just north of the city, ; was shot and killed by his son, John Smith, a youth 15 or 16 years old. After beating his wife, it is i alleged that Smith was in the act of shooting her when the boy told him not to shoot his mother. The gun snapped when young Smith picked up a cheap single barrel gun and shot his father dead in his tracks. The boy was committed to jail this morning and the inquest will be held this afternoon. * The Smiths came to Laurens from Tennessee about a year ago to work in the cotton mill. Pcpe Norris, one of the oldest citizens of Columbia, and also one of the eldest Baptist ministers in the country, died at his residence in that city Friday night. Mr. Norris was a native of Edgefield county, hating been born near Batesburg nearly 87 years ago. Durhis younger life he was one of the most active and prominent ministers in the Baptist church, and his earnestness of purpose and sincerity of heart, together with his devotion to the cause of Christianity, made him a prominent man in all conventions and meetings for the dissemination of the gospel.
