BBHKHnBBBBBUBnBiiiiBDBDi THE LEXIH6T0N DESPATCH. Wednesday, April 19, 1905. At Homo and Abroad. T. X. L. cures neuragia. Corn is up to good stand. What is everybody's business is also the devil's. The days of the barbecues are coming on apace. The price of hen fruit is going up as Easter approaches. Some of the vegetable gardens about town look real pretty. The boys can now enjoy the fascinating sport of egg picking. Thorn ?o nn Innor^r anv talk of peace between Japan and Russia. Ifc seems that fickle April is lingering in the lap of miecbiveous March. T. X. L. cures rheumatism. When a girl is married it dosen'fc take her long to get over being afraid of men. Marriages may be arranged in heaven, but the printer expects pay on earth. The balking mule is to the wagon what the selfish, narrow citizen is to the town. The soda fountains will soon begin to sizz and the ice man will be in his glory. Annmber of Lexingtonians went over to Columbia Friday to take in the Boer War. There are more people trading in town these day than has ever been known before. As a matter of precaution all those who have not yet done so, should be vaccinated at once. A little money from some of our delinquents subscribers would be very acceptable just now. The Japs up to this writing, April 15, have not yet succeeded in catch- I ing up with KusBia's war ships. Sunday is Easter at which time the Summer Girl will make her first appearance in the campaign of flirtation. The petifereous fly now tickles the . bald pate of the crusty old bachelor as he attempts to take his mid day nap. Friday is Good Friday and is celebialed as a Church Festival in commemoration of the crucifixion of our Lord and Saviour. The days are getting longer, but ? ? As soon as they settle they will be in better condition than they have been be-, fore. A question testing the constitutionality of "beer privileges" has been raised before the State Board of Dispensary Directors. ' Thirtyfour beer dispensers in this State have been summoned to shown cause on April 24th, why they should not be removed for violating the dispensary law. This order will create considerable excitement in the cities where beer shops are located. There was a terrific thunder and rain storm h.re last Wednesday night. The artillery of heaven was uniimbered and there was a magnificent display of lightning. A bolt struck the lightning rod on the barn of Mr. W. W. Barre, on College hill, ran down and entered the ground, tearing it up to some extent. A calf, which was laying down near where the rod entered the ground, was killed outright, and a horse which was in the stable, was severely shocka moo /-Jr\"r\a OU> V^^UOiUQiouic uornago noo uuuc to the telephones. Fortunately no person was hurt. We see it stated that it is just possible that an effort will be made to cut off a portion of Lexington county to form the proposed county of Wagener. This project has been tried before and its projectors found that they had monkeyed with a buzz saw, and we opine that if it is. again tried the same result will follow. We are informed that the people of that portion of the county proposed to be cut have no desire to make a change. They are industrious, prosperous and contented, and all they ask is to be let alone in their contentment that they might erjoy their prosperity. It is very doubtful if the requisite number of signatures to order an election can be secured if an attempt is made. Eo'w's This? In Is talk on the gallows he made a pathetic appeal to thuse present to help in the cause of temperance and laid his crime at the door of whisky. The drop fell at 11:12 and at 11:16 he was pronounced dead by county physician Fishbourne. The orowd present were effected at the pathetic scene on the gallows and many of them joined in singing the fcwohymi 8 after Parr had concluded his religious exercises. Clarence Shealy, for whose murder Parr paid the death penalty, was a native of this county, and was well known to many of our people, his people having wdrked in the cotton mill in this place for sometime. Parr, while not a native, is also well known in several sections of the county, he having worked in several of cotton mills. - While on the gallows he said without a tremor of fear that he wished to speak: "I want to tell you all that whiskey has been my ruin. I feel that you are all my brothers and you can see what whiskey has done for me. I want you to do all you can to make this a dry country and deliver it from the curse of whiskey. Xou see what it has done. Whiskey fires the brain and makes a man go off down the street and fill himseif up and the first thing you know be is shot or cut up. I did the murder. This novelette will win new laurels for Mr. Burgess. Proposed New County. The proposition for a new county which may conflict with the proposed Heyward county will come before the Governor shortly. It is proposed to form the county of Edisto with either Perry or Wagener as the county seat. The county would take off parts of Aiken, Orangeburg and Lexington counties and a survey will be made of the proposed territory shortly. If this scheme should be carried out it would defeat Heyward county on account of reducing Aiken below the constitutional limit. \ N. A. We can explain it only on the ground that the devil is the father nf all enlda Tfc wnnld seem that colds are a punishment for our sine. The pure in heart ought to be exempt from them, bat they are not. The vicious often manage to escape. Just at present thousands of people are suffering from colds They don't know where they got them, or how they come to loose them. There are few diseases that inflict more torture than rheumatism and there is probably no disease for which such a a varied and useless lot of remedies have been suggested. To say tliat it can be cured is. therefore, a bold statement rn make, but Chamberlain's Pain Balm, which enjoys an extensive sale, lias met with great success in the treatment of this disease. One application of Pain Balm will relieve the pain, and hundreds of sufferers have testified to permanent cures by its use. Why suffer when Pain Balm affords such quick relief and costs but a trifle? Congressman Sydney Mudd, of Maryland, is said to have told this story about an old negro who was a Trial Justice in Georgia during the reconstruction period. His first case happened to bo one in which the defendant asked for a trirl by jury. When the testimony was all in and the argument had been concluded, the lawyers awaited for the judge to proceed with his instructions to the jury. The justice seemed somewhat embarrassed. Fioally one of the lawyers whispered to him and told it was time to charge the jury. Looking at the jury with a grim judicial air, the judge said: vjeuueLueii uu uo jury, BOUBO UID is a very email case, I'll jes' charge y'all a dollar an' a ha'f apiece."
