A Chinaman from Port Aifcbur, September 15tb, gays that the Japanese are tunnelling under the Russian forts with the intention of blowing them up. The Russians have pteced mines under all the public buildings, wharves, arsenals aDd everything that could possibly be of use to the Japanese with the intention of causing their destruction should they enter the city. Ammunition is growing scarcer but there is plenty of bread. A shell struck a destroyer whinh io nnw lvinc in dock under "*"v- - " -J D going repairs, knocking it into kindling wood and killing seven sailors. This shell cam9 from the Japanese fleet which comes much closer than formerly daily throwing a few shells. The five^/i 1-inch guns on Golden Hill formerly pointed seaward, have been rearranged and are now pointing landward. Of all the Kussian ships in the harbor only Bis are fully able to participate in another fight at present. London, Sept. 16 .?Advices from the front indicate that there will be a long lull in the fighting, while tbe Japanese replenish tbeir men and stores of ammunition. A new Euro- < X- ' pean brigade has just reached Gen. i Kuropatkin, who thereby is able to give rest to his troops recently engaged. v Experts here do not expect the Japanese to make any real progress before the cold weather sets in which is liable to stop everything until spring, when the Russians will be ready to begin offensive operations. C, Sept. 10.?A very large number of the North Carolina i cotton mills have shut down, stating that it was for the purposes of repairs. The facts is, cotton is somewhat scarce and so high that the < mills in most cases say there is no profit in the manufacture at present figures. It is pretty safe to say that fewer spindles are in operation now , in this State than in several years ( nftRt. in snite of the fact that there ; r T r? - j is a large increase in a number of ] mills. The building of mills has fal- < len off somewhat this year, but still j there has been a gain of a good many 1 thousand spindles. I Most of the mills now idle expect f to start up again the 1st of October. r This has been a very hard year on j the mills, but very few have gone to the wall; in fact, only two in North Carolina, out of some 300. A great 1 taany of the mill employes have t taken work on the farms and so have t fared pretty well, all labor being in s great request for the farmers, and t the wages of white laborers a3 well as colored being at ieast 30 per cent, higher than they were two or three years ago. Most of the mlils are in small towns and heDes it is very easy for the operatives to get farm work. It is this which relieves a strain which in New England would be severely felt. If every cotton mill operative, and there are over 75,COO of tbein in North Carolina, were at work on the farme4 there would yet be a demand lor more, so eager are me larajere tu secure labor. Tbe resignation of Rev. Geo. S. Bearden was a surprise to the Joint Council of the Lexington Charge of the South Carolina Synod at their meeting, September 3, 1904, which was given tc take effect at tbe next meeting of the Synod. The resignation was not accepted until a committee of one officer from each church could see him and ask him to withdraw it. At the Bame time the salary was raised $100. The committee met at hia home on the 10th, inst, but could not prevail on him to continue as their pastor. He expressed himself as being sorry to leave them as he entertained the strongest regard for the work, but his removal from the midst of the South Carolina Synod would neces eitate a renewing of his connection with the Charge. Yice President Smith of the meat cutters' and butchers' union said the vote of the conference board of the Allied Trades council to bring the trouble to end was unanimous. President Donnelly has telegraphed the decision to all cities where the workmen have been on a strike. President Donnelly said: "Although we have not won all we b truck for we go back as an organization. Both sides have learned a lesson. The butchers will build up a better and stronger organization from the experience of the past. I do not believe the packers will discriminate against the union men." The Pension Board. The meeting of the Old Soldiers, called Monday for the purpose cf electing a Pension Board for Lexington for the ensuing year, met and reelected the old B}ard. H Roof, who has been serving the Cedar Grove pastorate for several years, will soon leave to attend the Theological Seminary at ML Pleasant. Rev. B. D. Wessinger, who has served the St. Peter's pastorate since June, 1903, has accepted a call to become pastor of the charge vacated by Rev. Roof. Rev. Some mills recently idle have started again. About 75,000 operatives have been idle there for some time. One hundred and one Filipino students have been assigned to twenty American schools and colleges to gain an education. It is a part of the insular government system to send these Filipinos to the United States to be educated and then to return them to the islands to enter^the civil government service. Texas is getting to be the rice state of the country. In 1897 they planted 10,000 acres. They began to increase until in 1903 there were 220,000. The rice area of the State is nearly as large as the State of Indiana. The Southern Methodist Church at i Statesboro. Ga.. have bv resolution denounced the horrible crime in that place, the burning of two negroes, and they have asked members participating in it to withdraw from the church. Those eligible to register and have not yet done so or who have lost or misplaced their certificate, should remember that the first Monday in October is the last day before the general election in which to get a certificate or renewal. This is important and should be attended to at once. According to the Railroad Gazette, the recent wreck at Eden, Col., was the worst railroad disaster in point of loss of life, which baa ever occurred in this country. It is believed that more than 100 persons were killed in the disaster. In August. 1887, at Chatswortb, II!., 85 lives were lost in a railroad vsreck, and this was the record until the Colorado disaster.
