Ya.. Sept. 8, 1904. j To the Editor of the D;spatch: The Brookland Light Iofantry,Co. j M., 2i S C Y. Rjgt, left Brookland ! Saturday, Sept 3 and marched over I the bridge to the City of Columbia, j where tbey boarded the train via A j C L., forty-three strong, all in good j spirits, lively but not boisterous. The company was lunched on the train at Florence, where'they were also furnished with haversacks, canteens, tin plates, tin cups, water buckets, spoons, knives and forks, after which W8 proceeded on our way viaFayettsville, N. C, Rocky Mount, N C, Richmond, Gordounville, Manassas, to this place, Thouroughfare, Va., rbout twelve miles west of Manassas, where we arrived about o o'clock p. m. Sunday 4th. On our arrival we were marched out into an old field not far from the foot of the mountain. It being late when we were assigned our camp ground we had to bivouac without tents or shelter tff any kiDd and the nights being cold out here, the men euffered from the cold chilly winds of the mountains. Monday ? roitli Ar\rv morning we were imuioucu muu or fly tents, one for every two men, also with an army camp range for cooking, choking utensils, wood anu | coal for fire and everything that is j needed to make camp life agreeable. Our rations consist of fresh beef, canned beef, bacon, I-ish potatoes, onions, beans, pork and beans, sugar, coffee, rice, tomattoes, blackberry jam, pickles, vinegar, pepper, salt, candles, etc. Iq addition to the above we huy apples, peaches, chickens, eggs, butter, pies of all kinds and sweet milk in abundance at from 5 to 10 cents a quaat. I have not the time or space to give you an extended account of the trip, the country surrounding the battle that is now raging, &c , will say just here, however, that Capt. R. L. Shuler'e company, the Broobiand Light Infantry, Co. M-, 2nd S. C. Regt., acquitted itself nicely and was * * * * ' " T? nigniy compnmeubtu tui no excellent manuvers in the fight yesterday. It was sent out to support Capt. Black's company from Walter- ! boro, S. C., and being deployed in I reserve behind a ten rail stske and rider fence. Black's company, who were now bein^ hard pressed by the enemy. In order to reach Capt Black in time this company had to climb a steep hill in double quick time, take shelter behind another fence before the enemy could reach said point. The company executed this manuver in excellent order, saved Capt. Black's company from capture and defeat aDd was thereby highly complimented for being instrumental in their efforts which accomplished the defeat of the Blues i at ADtioch church Sept. 7tb, 1904. The boys after having been out all night before last was brought in after the engagement yesterday and went into camp last night and had a good night's rest, after which with two days rations they left again this morning at 10 o'clock and are now on the march to Manassas, where they will engage in battle again today. I can hear the cannon now firing at Manassas, twelve miles dis| tant from here. Our boys are all nicely behaved and are to be complimented on having such kind, courteous and gentlemanly officers as Captain Shuler, LeiutenaDts Gayden and Sbull, who are all doing everything in their power to make the boys comfortable and satisfied. If nothing prevents we will leave camp for home od Monday morning next, the 12:b, and will arrive in Columbia next day. Dear Sir: Some think we take a good deal of risk in inviting complaints of Devoe lead-and-zinc?we authorize our agent to sell it under this guarantee: "If you have any fault to find with this paint, either now in putting it on, or hereafter in the wear, tell your dealer about it. "We ausnonze didj 10 uo wuat ia i right at our expense." The following story tells how little I the risk is: J. H. Asher & Co., hardware dealers, Khineback, N. Y, sold Devoe from '7G to now; have sold thousands 7 of gallons and have had just one complaint in all this time. Three sides of a house were perfect; the fourth was as bad as the i three were good. I Explanation? It rained the night \ before the fourth side was painted; | and the painters didn't wait for the I wood to dry. What is done in such a case? " Whatever the dealer, who sold the paint, considers it fair to do. We leave it to him. He may not do exactly what we should do if we were J there: but we are not there. The ei best we can do is to leave it to him. h< Yours truly, 1( F. W. Devoe & Co , New York. P. S.
