A ICatter of Postage. t New York Press. ' "Postage is something of an item * i U-_ 1 ID our DU81068P, gaiu ioe general manager of a corporation that supplies one of the necessaries of life. "We have 20,000 accounts which have to be squared every month. We mail a statement?two cents; the customer mails a check?two cents; we mail a receipt?two cents. Thus it costs our customers $400 a mouth to settle their obligations, or $4,800 ^ a year. It costs us $800 a month, ? or $9,600 a year. Naturally, we are in favor of one cent postage. A twocent stamp is a small matter in the | abstract, and people who write a few dozen letters a year don't mind it, ' but when a correspondence requires It the purchase of $480,000 of stamps V a year the item assumes a magnitude | that commands respect." Care of Horses. The careful man and good groom will not neglect to take the harness off his horses at noon when coming in from the fields during the summer mnnlha Onlu in fKia mav nan fhov wu""J ?- -?J obtain a full, free rest, just as a man does when he "shucks" his coat and loosens his collar. Once during the fey, preferably at night, the same f wise and kindly man will give his feorses a good currying and cleaning. Then the horses retire to rest feeling just as a man does who has taken a good bath and rubbing down. He sleeps well, dreams of good corn and clover, wakes up refreshed and strong, ready for another day's hard work, and altogether is on the road to conr sinned good health. Not a Bake Shop. t4I want a removal sign painted, and I'm in a dreadful hurry," said the physician's wife as ehe bustled f into a sign painter's establishment. "I want a pjain tin sign, painted black, with white letters, and I'll wait for it." "Very well, madam," said the brush handler. "Did you briDg your lunch?" "Why, no. 1^ thought you could P do it in a very few minutes?" "It may take several hours to dry." "But can't you put it in the oven ?" asked the woman impatiently. "Madam," said the painter, with dignity, "this is a painter shop. We do no baking here." " I y Republican Extravagance. Washington, July 21.?The heavy * expenditures at the beginning of the ! fiscal year have resulted in creating j ) a deficit this month of $19,000,000 and reducing the treasury working balance from $50,000,000, the normal figure, to $34,000,000. Another Account. "Mr Tomkins," said the head of a firm, "you are a personal friend of f Mr Robertson's, I understand?" ' "That is eo, sir," said Tomkins. "Well, I wish you'd try to get this account from him. Nobody else can, and it's a long time overdue." Tomkins agreed to trv, but the nex: morning bis face wort- a somtwha* carious expression. "Well," said tte head, '*how did you get on?" "I?I don't know,'' said Tomkins. ' You see, I called there last night and saw the old man. 'Mr Rob?rtsoD,' I said to him, 'I've called to ask you if? And then he caught me up. 'That's all right, my boy,' said he, 'you can have her. I hope you'd be hspp?!' Hacs War Daveloping. Columbia Stat-e. A race war is said to be developing in the Chicago strike district. An effort was made in the packing house restaurants to replace the striking cooks with colored meD, but the young women employed as waiters in the dining rooms at once took cfif their aprons and walked out. Colored men were immediately engaged in place of the girls. The incident has served to inflame the incensed sentiment of the white strikers toward the negro "scabs" and the appearance of a colored man in the neighborhood of the packing houses has been the signal for an outbreak. The Slocum Disaster.
