Bv reference to tbe proceedings of tbe Democratic clubs published elsewhere in this issue, it will doubtless be noticed that the Piney Woods Democrats, passed a resolution endorsing the proposition of building a free bridge, at some central point, across Saluda river. This is an important marter and one in which all onr people are more or less directly interested in. Such a bridge would undoubtedly be less expensive to the people than the present system of paymg their own ferriage and that of juries and witnesses while attending court both comiDg aod going. Then there a?e the citizens of tbeccunty to be considered. We are saii^fied that a large m*j jrity of our people favor tbe building of the bridge and were their wishes consulted in the matter they would not hesitate to say so. Oar travels through the county in late years taught us that all the in tereafcs of the people makes (his bridge a necessity and that this necessity is recognized and appreciated by them. Tne time is ripe for the work to be commenced, for the longer it is delayed, the inconvenience and annoyance are increased. The matter is within the province of the County Commissioners to decide and what are they goiDg to do about it is of much interest to us all and their decision is anxiously awaited. i The primary in the Second Congressional district to select a candi- ? date to succeed late Congressman G. W. Crcfc, was held last Saturday. Out of a total vote of 8 454, T. G Croft received 4,069, a plurality of 2,359 over Mr May field, who recieved I 1,710; Williams, 1,499; Patterson, , 1,175. Mr. Croft lacked only 158 of receiving a majority. Croft and May field will run the race over on May 7ch. | The Centennial E iition of the News and Courier has been received 1 It is certainly a beautiful piece of typographical w^rk and is filled with interesting reading matter. The i illustrations are profuse and appro priate showing tbe development of what is today tbe best daily in tbe t South from a emdl and unpromising begiBniDg.
