Soartanbure Journal. 4 CJ A July Snowstorm. In the year 1S50 a snowstorm swept over New York on the 5Lh of July. It was Monday, and the fireworks, which were then set off in front of the city hall in celebration of the glorious Fourth, had been kept over from Saturday. The weather was pleasant enough in the morniDg during the greater part of the afternooD, hut toward dusk heavy clouds appeared in the sky, a northwest wind followed, the thermometer went down to 31 degrees?one degree below freezing?and the snowflakes came down at a lively gait. Men who went out that night wore their winter overcoats and did not find them uncomfortable, for the cold lasted for hours. To Suppress all Gambling. Columbia, S. C, July 9.?A. mass meeting was held at the opera house for the purpose of taking some definite action for the supression of the gambling evil. The meeting was largely attended and was thoroughly representative. After speeches by several prominent citizens, resolutions were adopted calling upon the mayor, council and board of police commissioners of this city to suppress gamblers and gambling of every form. A committee of five was appointed ot present these resolutions to the council at its next meeting and to present copies to the board of police commissioners. Must save seen saregoric. Rome, July 10?It became known today that the difference of opinion was so strong among the Cardinals at the meeting to prepare the answer to the Taft proposal that a stormy scene ensued. Cardinal Steinhuber vigiorously opposed Kampalla Sirapto and Yannitallix. The plans of those who were willing to concede Taft'a demand as to the friars withdrawal, ultimately succeeded in gaining a majority against the expulsion of the friars from the Philippines.
