j the total losses of the Boers during
| the war were 3,700 men killed or died
1 of wounds, and 32.000 made prisoners,
700 of whom died. The Boer

A bishop was traveling in a mining
country and encountered an old Irishman
turning a windlass which hauled
up ore out of a shaft. It was his
work to do this all day long. His
hat was off, and the sun poured down
on his unprotected head.

The Irishman wiped the sweat off
his forehead and looked at the clergyman.

Discordant Element.
The discontent of the negro and
mongrel element in the Cuban population
makes the failure of reciprocity
with the island even more unfortunate
than it would be otherwise.
If Cuba had been treated fairly, all
classes of the population would have
been prosperous and therefore peaceful,
at least for the time being, and
until their own government could get
the public business into good run?

discontent is taking the form of race
animosity, which, in a community
like that of Cuba, is the worst form
of trouble.

Senators Bailey,Tillman and Money
are three Southern Senators who have
made themselves conspicuous during
the session of Congress just ended,
and they have shown ability which
will make them successful in the
prize ring if their constituents should
ask them to leave the Senate.

(Mo.) Globe, asks: "What was the

Bryan in 1896." This question is

Why They Shave Mules.
Martha McCullough-Williams in
the course of the narrative of "Next
to the Ground," explains many customs
and superstitions peculiar to the
negroes.
Not the least interesting of these
is the reason given for the shearing
of mules.
"When it came to shearing mules," <
Mrs. Williams writes, "Dan was an
artist. He had spent two hours or
more at it the day before. Manes
were trimmed to half-inch upstanding
fringep, tails banged to the pertest
tasseled tip, even the ears had
been shorn of their long inner hairs.
Dan had a firm faith in witches. Now
a witch, it is well known, cannot ride
down ahorse or mule unless there are
hairs long enough to twist into a
stirrup. Dan had not left a single
long one?hence he was satisfied the
teams would thrive and stand up to
their work, not to name being ever
so much more bidadle since witches,
working unhindered, put the devil
into the best broken of them."

been regarded as injurious to
both the vision and the general health
by physicians and laymen alike.
There is comfort, however, for those

statement of a Pennsylvania physician
who maintains that reading in a
recumbent position is actually a benefit,
not an injury. He reasons it out
in technical terms and also in language
which an ordinary lay brother
comprehend. Whenever possible, he
says, we bring gravity into play to
relieve congestion, especially that of
a passive type. Prolongued eye-work
results in congestion of the veins
about the eyes, and when reading in
a recumbent position is restored to
gravity aids relieving this congestion.
Surely there is some sense in that.
He hopes for a change in the general
sentiment. The possibilities which
might result from such a change appeal
to the imagination. Think of
the self-improvement rendered possible.
Men and women who are exhausted
with the toils of the day
might then improve their minds by
reading after retiring at night.?

A July Snowstorm.
In the year 1S50 a snowstorm
swept over New York on the 5Lh of
July. It was Monday, and the fireworks,
which were then set off in
front of the city hall in celebration of
the glorious Fourth, had been kept
over from Saturday. The weather
was pleasant enough in the morniDg
during the greater part of the afternooD,
hut toward dusk heavy clouds
appeared in the sky, a northwest
wind followed, the thermometer went
down to 31 degrees?one degree below
freezing?and the snowflakes
came down at a lively gait. Men
who went out that night wore their
winter overcoats and did not find
them uncomfortable, for the cold
lasted for hours.
To Suppress all Gambling.
Columbia, S. C, July 9.?A. mass
meeting was held at the opera house
for the purpose of taking some definite
action for the supression of the
gambling evil. The meeting was
largely attended and was thoroughly
representative.
After speeches by several prominent
citizens, resolutions were adopted
calling upon the mayor, council
and board of police commissioners of
this city to suppress gamblers and
gambling of every form.
A committee of five was appointed
ot present these resolutions to the
council at its next meeting and to
present copies to the board of police
commissioners.

"This search of the Democrats
after an issue in the Philippines,"
said Representative Olmstead of
Pennsylvania; according to the New
York World, "reminds me of a client
of mine the necessities of whose large
family, recently augmented by twins,
made him poor. He came to me
joyfully one day and said he had found
oil flowing from a spring on his land.
"The bottle containing the sample
which he brought me had evidently
seen family use, but I forwarded it to
an expert for analysis. The reply
dashed to the earth the hopes of my
client and myself. The expert said:
" 'Find no trace of oil. Think your
friend has struck paregoric."
Taft's Mission.
Rome, July 10?It became known
today that the difference of opinion
was so strong among the Cardinals
at the meeting to prepare the answer
to the Taft proposal that a stormy
scene ensued. Cardinal Steinhuber
vigiorously opposed Kampalla Sirapto
and Yannitallix. The plans of those
who were willing to concede Taft'a
demand as to the friars withdrawal,
ultimately succeeded in gaining a
majority against the expulsion of the
friars from the Philippines. This is
generally considered to mean the defeat
of Taft's Mission.
