There are in the islands of Great Britain ItkOOO barmaids, and most of them are Engli !i girls, l ew Irish girls serve in sitch capacity, and in Scotland the liquor is served by girls who have come from England. These girls are compelled to work from sixteen to eighteen hours each (lav, with but a single hour out of the twenty-four allowed them for eating their meals. The girls sulfcr terribly in health from their work? alcoholic poisoning from opening flagons, from dyspepsia ar.cl from fatigue. There are 10,000 young women employed in London alone as barmaids and bartenders. A recent investigation showed that of this number the majority were the daughters of army and navy officers, clergymen and merchants, not shopkeepers. Little Man Eaters. There are other fishes which will attack man besides sharks, the worst of which are not more ferocious than a small South American fish found in the waters of the Orinoco river. It is a little creature, only six or eight inches in length, but in schools it will attack human beings and cat them up alive if it gets a chance. When you go fishing in that river, these fierce pygmies will lake bites out of the iisli you catch as you are hauling them in, and you will do well not to fall out of The boat if you '.risli to escape being mutilated. The Inventor of Postage Stamps. The inventor of the gummed postage stamp was a Scotsman, Mr. James Chalmers of Dundee, who in JS34 suggested the adoption of the practical system of aiiixing adhesive squares of paper to envelopes. Mr. Chalmers was ridiculed, and, among others, medical men predicted that the constant licking of gum would ho nroiudioial to the health of the "I *? nation. It was not until 1841 that the plan of Mr. Chalmers received the serious attention of liie postofJicc authorities.?London Answers. A C-ospel Truth.
