The Governor yesterday received the following petition, having many signatures, he proposes to immediately advise the magistrates nearest the scene of the trouble that they are expected to take up the matter and act in accordance with the law: We, the undersigned citizens of Aiken and Orangeburg counties, living along the Edisto ask your attention to the very great destruction of " * * - - ' * # i fish in the i^dieto oy tne useoi aynamifc:?the quantity in the river has already been diminished greatly and 1 we have reason to fear that if some action is not taken by the govern- j menl to stop the practice of throw- i ing dynamite in the rivers by those .* de&iring to get fisb, that reck fish, | red horse and other species will be a thing of the past in our river. We do ask your ( excellency to use any means in your power to stop this wholesale destruction of the fish in our waters and we do invoke the assistance of the legisture. He Sspt His Leg. People go to church to hear the Gospel preached and if they don't hear it they discontinue going to church. Then some churches get up ' * attractions which are calculated to ] entertain the congregation. It may 1 be in the shape of fine organs and ; * % operatic singing, or it may be in decorations aDd flowers or it may be sensational sermons. People soon get tired of these spectacular inducements and the pews are agaia empty and some new device must be sought ont. It is said that a Sunday school in A ugusta is to be made more popular by organizing a choir of boys to whittle instead of sing the hymns. Aud now comes a Chicago preacher who intends to fill bis church by giv ing to every lady who attends bis church a "souveLir" in the shape of a naif-tene picture. So a lady who attends his church can hears sermon and get a cbromo, too. Food Changed to Poison. The money drawer and a desk were broken cpm and ransacked The burglars failed to realize more than 7 or S pennies, a few postal sards, two stamped envelopes and the mail for Tacapau and the rural routes Nos. 1 and 2. The mail was carried some distance from the office in the woods and burned up. Two white men were brought to the city and lodged in jail on suspi cion. These parties were found at the spot near where the mail mattewas burned. One of these men gave as his name WilsoD, the other sails under the cognomen of Croft; but ntfttflH that he is the illegitimate son of John D. Rockefeller. She complained of pains in her chest and bad a bad cough. I gave her Chamberlain's Cough Remedy according to directions and in two days she was well able to go to school. I have used this remedy in my family for the past seven years and have never j known it to fail/' says James Prendergast, Annato Bay, Jamaica, West ] India Islands. The pains in the chest indicated an approaching attack of pneumonia, which in this instance was undoubtedly warded off by Chamberlain's Cough Remedy. There are many indications that Mr. Roosevelt's Southern policy is approved by tbe wise heads of bis party, and, though he has courage in plenty, we doubt if its exercise is called for in this case. It is perceiv ed to be beet tor tne party 8 own integrity to begin to clean out tbe Augoan stable of corruption in tbe party's South branch. To this motive is added tbe desire and ex j pectation that such a course will in time win over 3 large and respectable contingent of able white men, without which a Republican party worth the name is impossible in this section. We should therefore call the presided Southern policy one of enlightened self-interest. It is one the lesscommendadle, however. Dcz/t Lst Them Suffer. Snaky Jim. the half breed who is employed in place ol steam power to turn our press, went or strike. While we pay him .'10 cents ar hour, he declared that we were suck in?: his lifoblood and setting rich by grinding liira to a pulp. There was little time to argue the question. Twen ty million readers were waiting foi that issue of The Kicker, and wo hati only half an hour to catch the mail for Persia and Egypt. In this emergency we seized Snaky and spent four minutes turning him upside down and inside out. and as we dropped him on liis feet lie seized the crank of the press and ran her up to C'0,000 revolutions an hour. Saturday week we rode over to Dene1 Man's river to look at a piece of wild land offered for sale, and we had WE GOT A HOVE ON CS. scarcely arrived on the site when a big cinnamon bear broke cover and made a dash at us. We arc neither a Nimrod nor a hero, and it is only now and then that we make an ass of ourself. We got a move on us without waiting for any one to press the button, and, though the bear put in his best licks for half a mile, we got clear off and didn't go back to measure his tracks. We often pity the eastern editor who has nothing to warm up hie hlnnrl ovwnf ::r. oecasional class of lemonade. j Friday afternoon last Major Thomas I paid us a long threatened visit. More than two months ago lie asked us to spell the name of Job with two b's, and because we refused be declared that he would call as soon as convenient and pepper us. It wasn't much of a pepper. We were seated at our editorial desk, our back to the door, when the major entered aud began blazing away. We didn't oven have to dodge. None of his six bullets came within a foot of us, and when he had fired the last one we gently took him by the ear and led him outdoors. The-major is not a bad sort, taken all around, and we wish that he could understand our position.
