Dealers Getting Hold of Thousands of Acres Through Timber Scrip. A clique of timber dealers in Dulutb, Minn , section are not getting something for nothing, but they are " ???? if ir? a /loll thfli Bqr COLLULIg YOJJ ucai iv iu <? uvji> _ ? just been discovered. They are locating on thousands of acres of the $nest timber lands in northern Minnesota at a cost that is merely nomi nal, and some of them, if they carry the scheme far enough, will reap enormous profits from the successful issue of the deal. They are working this through what is known as "forestry scrip." When Cleveland was president one of the principal acts of his second administration was to set aside a large area of land, mostly in the west, for forest reservations. On some of this and there were settlers and of course the government could not take their land away from them without compensa tioo. * So this "forestry scrip" was prepared and issued to them in lieu of the lands that had been taken by the government. It could be located on any land anywhere in the Uoitcd States, either surveyed or unsurveyed, and it was the first scrip ever issued by the government that could be located on unsurveyed lands. On this account and because of its general utility it was very desirable. The timber dealers referred to have recently been purchasing it in large quantities from $2 to SI per acre, and with it they are located on timber lauds in suivejed"districts in the nothern part of this state, where there are yet thousands of acres of lani that are unsurveyed, though they are being surveyed and thrown open to settlement from time to time. Iq this way they are getting at a ridiculously low price lands that will very soon be worth several hundred times what they are now paying for them. When the territory is surveyed and thrown open to settlement it is not likely that there will be many acres of desirable lands left, for there teems to be a large supply of the Hares, on the other band, are proveibially the moat timid of crea turef; yet they can fight. A fight between two hares is a ludicrous sight, as they skip and jump over one another. But a blow from the hiDd legs of a hare is no joke to his opponent. Among birds, robiDs are the most pugnacious. More than oDe case could be quoted of two robins so fiautically set on killing one another as to have allowed themselves to be picked up in the hands of a looker on and there have laid with beak and claws deeply buried in one another's plumage. - Fair Warning. Parents and others are notified that no school books will be sold on credit. We have to pay cash for them ourselves and the profit is so s nail that we are forced to adopt and strictly adhere to the cash system. This applies to one and all, to ii is needless for anyone to ask for credit in the purchase of school looks. We now have in 6tock a full line cf books used in the schools of the county, which we are selling at schedule prices. The Bazaar. scrip, aD<3 it is working so well here that these dealers are getting hold of as much of it as they can and using it all in the same way. The scheme is perfectly legal, as the men to whom the sciip is issued have a right to sell it and convey to the purchaser their rights in it Only a few men are working it, and the result will be the accumulation in their hands of most of the unsurveyed timber lands in the northern part of this state if the supply of scrip holds out. An appeal to congress may be made this winter to stop the practice if possible. Cavies or Guinea Pigs. Guinea pigs are an interesting lit tie pet for the children; are easy to keep, thrive and do well. They are perfectly harmless and quite profitable; they will rid any building from rats, that they might be put in. Per pair, grown $1 00; young 50c. ' Address Rice B. Harman. - Animals and Birds That Fight. You would hardly believe that moles, clumsy and almost blind, be come perfect demons when they quarrel. No one knows what they quarrel about, but if they once start fighting, one has to die. They will keep cn in the presence of any number of spectators, hanging on to one another like bulldogs, and buryiDg their enormously strong jaws and teeth in on6 another's flesh. Hedgehogs, another type of the quiet, inoffensive looking animal, not ouly fight, but always to the death, and when one is killed the other generally devours him. |j. . Necessity mothers invention, but invention mothers disaster, says the Toledo Blade, as it proceeds to tell of the young grocery clerk and how ho was undone by the self coiling string boldei: The clerk got into the habit, years ago, of biting off the string instead of breaking it, after tying bundles Naturally his teeth protested against the practice. At length they gavt up and wore out. He bought false teeth. Before he fairly got acquainted with them, so to speak, the patent string-holder was established in the store. Then as fate would have it, ayouDg woman whom he secretly admired came in to buy five pounds of sugar. With the activity of an anxious lover he made up the package and tied it. TheD, according to his old custom, he bent forward and severed the string with his teeth. But he forgot the holder, and he did not realize that the end of the cord had wedged itself between two of his new teeth, until, as the spring rolled up the slack, his "plate" was hoisted from his mouth and triumphantly waved aloft at the end of a string. The Safest Part of a Train. A party of travelers in a train were talking over their traveling experience and the danger of accidents, and finally the question arose as to the safest part of the train. Failing to settle the question among themselves, they called on the guard, and one of them said to him: "Guard, we have been discussing the matter of the safest part of tl e train and waDt to know jour opinion.'' "Want to know the safest part, I eh replied the guard. "Yes, that's it.' "Well," continued the guard, "I've been on the line for 15 years and have been turned over embankments, 'busted' up in tunnels, dumped off cf bridges, telescoped in collisions, blown off the line by cyclones, run into open swi'ches and had oth r pleasant incidental divertisements of a kindred nature, aDd I should say, gentlemen, that the safest part of the train was that part which happened to be in the works for repairs at the time of the accident." Jack Babbit Was la His Way. A Chicago man who has just returned from a western trip, tells the Chicago News the new "jack rabbitt story:" As everybody knows, a jack rabbit is a lightning runner, or, as Maik Twain once said, "goes so fast that all you see is a crack in the air." It seems that a certain fat man, well knowu in Idaho, was out bear hunting with a paity who had beeD joking him as to what he would do if a bear took after him, and he -? 1 iu.i u~ always ciaiLutu iuhi uu v>uuiu jjui, run away. He was so scared, the other hunt ers say, that he seemed to be afraid the "jack" would hinder him in his flight for he was shouting: ' Get out of the way, jack rabbit, and let a man run that has to!" Margberita Ailiua Hatnm, tie well known traveler and author, called when in China upon the wife, rather the wives, of a great mandarin. Her visit partook of the nature of a festival, so novel was the experience of the Chinese women, whose lives are passed almost entirely within the walls of yamen. They examined her cloth ng, and were partly pleased and partly astonished at it. They were shockt d by her shoes, and especially by the fact that her feet were not confined by bindings. Finally one of them said, through } .1 the interpreter, "You can walk and ) run just as well as a man?" "Why, certainly." "Cm you ride a pony as well as a man?" ' Of course." "Then you must be as strong as most men?" "Yes, I think I am." "You wouldn't let a man beat you, not even your husband, would you?" "Not at all." The Chinese women passed, laughed and said: "Now I understand why foreigners never take more than one wife. They are afraid to." "THY WILL BE LONE!" There are tons of thousands of women, submitting: to conditions that involve daily martyrdom, a lingering:, painful death, who press the thorn of suffering deeper into their hearts with the prayer "Thy Will be Done." To every such woman comes the message, you were made to live a healthy, happy life and to enjoy wifehood and motherhood by Him who "makcth the barren woman to keep house and become a joyful mother of children." You are being robbed of your birthright. Pleasure in i il and happiness correspond to the duties of wifehood and the responsibilities of motherhood, just as surely as sweet scents correspond to the sense of smelliug. sweet sounds to the sense of hearing:, sweet sights to the sense of seeing. It is God's will that you enjoy all the faculties and functions of the body, and if in any chamber of this great house of the body, pain sits as a guest, it is not by right but by usurpation. The place belongs to joy not pain. WIIY DO WOMEN* DO IT, why do they suffer and submit to suffering, accepting all their pain as a providential dispensation ? It would seem to 1>e because only about thirty women in every hundred are exempt from every form of female disorder, and the majority accept their condition as the rule, and the healthy condition of the minority as the exception. And this is a serious mistake. Health should be the rule, disease the exception, and however in the past woman has had to endure suffering as the badge of her sex. such suffering has never been necessary pinee I)r. R..V. Thirty year's experience in the treatment of female disorders, a record of over 250.000 cases treated, three per cent, only of which j failed of complete cure, enables Dr. Pierce to speak with the authority of a master specialist when lie affirms that his "Favorite Prescription" will cure practically every case of female weakness, irregularity, displacement, ulceration, inflammation and every sympathetic result of such ailments. Remember that this cure means something vastly more than to merely stop the suffering. THE MEANING OF "CURE " is to be re-established in sound, substantial health, to have elasticity of body and be cheerful of spirits. To enjoy the cares of home as a recreation.
