The Lexington Dispatch Burned April 25th; rebuilt July 19, 1894. IG. M. HABMAN. Editor and Publisher. , LEXINGTON, S. C., WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18, 1893. Ere another issue of the Dispatch, Lexington will be all smiles and bows in receiving and welcoming her thousands of guests, who will have assembled to witness the opening of the Third Annnal Fair of the Lexington County Fair Association, which will be on "Wednesday, October 25th. In the name of the people of the town of Lexington we bid them welcome and now that our country cousins and city relatives have been invited to come and participate in the festivities of the occasion, let each one of us do our full share in adding to the pleasures of the occasion in every way we can. Let us strive to make this fair a big success, both financially and socially by attending the fair and mingling with the visitors and by doing this we will leave an impression on them that will be pleasant and favorable to our town. Col. Neal made the wife of Congressman Latimer a present of a bookcase, while be was Superintendent of the Penitentiary, valued at about $12. The Congressman has ptid this amount, which i3 to be used as credit for Neal's bondsmen. And thus another incident has been closed. Leesville Notes. To the Editor of the Dispatch: The college opened up with a good attendance and students from everj quarter kept coming in until now the attendance far exceeds the expectations of the professors. Nearly sixty boarding pupils are in attendance, with more to come. Mr. Malcomb Martin, of Congaree township, is assisting Mr. Shealy in the depot. Prof. J. Luther Kinard paid a flying visit to his eld home near Etheredge's on Saturday. Messrs. Matthews & Bouknight's handsome cottage on main street is having the finishing touches put on and will be occupied by tell you ! later. Major Perry, the sleeping preacher, will preach in the College chapel, on Thursday night, the 19th. This trance preacher is a wonder. No one has ever been able to explain. WThilp enfirplv nnfwnRpirmR hp preaches an intelligent sermon, can not be ixwakened while in this trance and knows nothing of it afterwards. Mr. Abner Asbill i3 wearing the badge of "Chief' now and is a terror to the evil doers of our town. Mr. James Hallman, of Samaria, is in town today visiting friends. Our gay widower is still on the wing and the belles in the piney woods had better look out. Miss Bessie Watson is visiting friends and relatives in Orangeburg J Messrs. Crouch Bros., have secured a large body of timber near Steadmans and will move their mill there shortly. Mr. Wm. Mays & Son, of Springfield, Ky., have been in town for a few days, looking up the prospect f >r selling stock this winter. Oct. 16, "99. Sol. Baptist Union Meeting. Swansea Doings. To the Editor of the Dispatch: The Lexington Baptist Association tmtat Harmony church onFtiday and was slimiy attended by reason of rain. On Saturday the attendance was large and attentive notwithstanding the bad day the interest was great and the attention good. For five or six hours consecutively on Saturday and Sunday the congregation listened | with an interest seldom witnessed. R-iv. A. P. Norris, a man well known to the Lexington people, preached and it was one of his sermons well equal to the power and ability of the man. Represenatives of the two denominational papers and the other denominational interests were present and took part in all the deliberations. On Saturday the church could hardly hold the people and the rain fell in torrents for hours and the body saw there was do chance to give dinner in the house for want of room and sat down to business without intermission, and adjourned at 3:30 o'clock p. m. and all went home in the rain. Sunday the interest was unabated and the Rev. Joab Edwards preached the charity sermon from the theme that, Yo shall be witnesses for me. The effort was able and earnest and the collection a good one. The association next October will convene with the Baptist church at Brookland. D. J. Knotts was selected Moderator, W. B. Fallaw, Clerk and D. E Craft, Treasurer. W. B. Fallaw is a good and ready pensman and fast in discharge of duty, and in keeping proper records, and is an all-round good recording officer. If D. E Craft fails of a full standard ideal treasurer it will be his first failure in duty. He was one of the 9,000 heroes who slacked his musket at Appomattox C. H., io April 'Go. He and two of his brothers, Thomas and Walter, who for four years had honored the grey jacket laid down on that historic day aDd field their arms as Confederate soldiers and in all loyalty became American citizens Since then D. E. Crafts has been true to bis church, his State and true ! to his private relations and is a sue cessful business man. There will be from Swansea at the County Fair three relicts, a cannon ball brought out of that struggle by a revolutionary soldier, and is still in possession of his grand children, and a ball about four pounds, cut from a pine when splitting rails by an old servant whose name was Hector long before the civil war. It was in a pine tree on the road from Camden to Augusta, called the "Tory trail." The road crosses Bull Swamp about two miles below Swansea, at what is called Pepper Camp branch, named from a Tory's camp Darned Pepper, and the ball was supposed to have been shot there during that evetful period as encounters did occur between the Patriots and Torys there. Also a pepper box which with one feather bed was the only things saved when the Torys destroyed the home of the grand sire in the times of 1776. These are still the property of the children of the revolutionary progenitor. Cf Interest to the Public. A visit to 4-Tbe King" Racket Store in Columbia will couviDce the most skeptical that its manager, Mr. J. Iv King, is a hustling business man and fully abreast of the times in buving and selling dry goods, dress goods, Yankee notions, ladies'cloaks, jackets and wraps, shoes, and in fact everything usually found in a store of this character. Having made a great hit and created wild excitement among the buyers of Columbia on account of the big values he is giving, he has determined to reach out and give the people of Lexington an opportunity to take advantage of the low prices at which he is selling hi3 goods. He therefore, invites the people of Lexington to visit his store, under Hotel Jerome, and inspect his tremendous stock and he ia satisfied that the prices will sell them. The quality of hi3 goods cannot be surpassed and his prices can hardly be duplicated. What he says in his advertisement on the first page of this issue, be means; it is a business proposition, made by a business man to a business people for business purposes and those who want to save money in the purchase of goods should by all means visit this store and see for themselves what he has to sell and what prices he sells at. It is a new store and he is a new man with new goods and is anxious to become acquainted with our people so that be can better understand their wants and prepare to supply them. Mr. C. F. Jackson, who was once a prominent dry goods merchant of Columbia, and is so well and favorable known in every nook and corner cf this county as "The Leader of Low Prices," is with Mr. King and would be pleased to give his host of friends and old time customers that hearty welcome and sincere greeting which characterized him in the days of yore. Having bad long business dealings with our people he is, perhaps, better qualified than any other person in that city, to understand the class, quality and price of goods they need, ar.d he can, therefore, serve them with satisfaction. Don't forge! that this store is under Hotel Jerome where these gentlemen awaits to wel come and serve the purchasing pub lie. They study to please. How's This!
