f; Kaiafrts of the Road. A | A 3>rummer Relates his Experience in Grand Rapids Michigan. What I like about these "Knights | of the Road*' is that they are great f fellows for secret societies. Most all the drummers belong to every thing that is going from that of the "Grand L Knights of Diamond Garter," down to "Sons of Intemperance." I am H quite a hand for all such mysterious things myself, so I get solid with all the boys. My old friend Crookston called on me the other day to see if I needed any drugs and to hjifeTa visit. We had a jolly old -fim? \Vhi1o wfl w?re sitting in the H office a chap came in and wanted to borrow $2 on account of a remittance not coming to him as he expected. I told him my $2 I kept to lend was in now, being sent in the day before by Johnny Mclntyre, but I never lent it except to drummers. He said W "That's me." I gave him the grand hailing sigh of an Odd Fellow, which WF he tumbled to. Then I came to the great "hair in the soot" grip of a Pythonic. He tumbled. Then Crook iBl gave him G. B. of the Sons of Malta, ft 3ELp.4yas^ggEb it. Then I tripped him e hmr-poking signal of a Good ftppler. He smiled and said "H. ft." This is a chemical term, mean"waters." Then Crook stuck rWffl u: his hand and gave him the noted ?* Arch He "got thar" on I^MWcJIows. to make sure he was j rfr drummer: Prom whence comest thou, pard? From the Lodge of the Holy St. j Johns, Michigan. What seek ye here to do? To take a few orders and collect a bill of Bilison. Then you are a drummea? I am so taken and accepted by the boys. How may I know you to be a daummer? By my cheek and my fifty pound j i sample case. Try me. rr MI * < i? bnow will you do tneaT By the squar! "Why by the squar! Because the squar' is a magistrate ?nd an emblem of stupdity. i Where were you first led to be a k drummer! HL Jn my mind. Where next K In a printing offiqe, adjoining regular post of drummers. How gained you admission? By benefit of my cheek. Had you the required cheek? X had not, but Steve Sears had it for me. How were you received ? On the sharp toe of a boot, applied to my natural trousers. What did this teach you? Not to fool around too much. What happened next? I was set down on a cake of ice and asked if I put my trust in mercantile reports. Your answer? Not if I know myself, I don't. How was you next handled ? I was put straddle of a goat made out of a 2x4, and trotted nine times around the room by four worthy brothers, and then trotted in front of the Left Bower for further instructions. How did he instruct you ? To approach a customer in three upright regular steps with my busi? n?d!j card oxtcnded at right angles, my arms forming a perfect square. How was you then disposed of ? I was again seated on the cake of ice in front of a dry goods store, and made to take the following horrible and binding oath: ly Charles S. Eobinson, do hereby and herein most everlastingly and diabolically swear by the Great Bob Tail Flush, that I will never reveal and always steal all the trade screts - ? I can for the use and benefit of the Most August Order. And I further swear; by the Bald headed Jack of Clubs, that I will never give, carve, make, hold, take or cut prices below the regular rates and I further swear by the Pipers that played before Moses, to never have any commercial dealings with any man or his wife sister, grandmother, old maid aunt or uncle unless they, he, she or it i3 sound on the goose. I was then asked what I most needed. What was your reply ? Money. What did you then behold? A copy cf Dun & Co's reports, open at chapter Muskegon. Upon the open book rested a pair of drug scales, in one pan of which rested ten pounds of concentrated lye and, in the other sat a small silver jackass. What did this emblem signify? The scales indicated the balance between debtor and creditor. The emblems represented de abilities and i assets of bankrupts. Did this teach you any lesson 1 xou bet J It taught me the fact j that the former are generally so | almighty much better than the latter. Shake! Brother! * * * Will j you be off or from ? Both, if I can borrow money enuff : to get out of town on. Have you any cigars ? i Give 'em to me. I did not so receive 'em, neither I Tcill T cn imrmrf 'am. How will you dispose of 'em. On sixty days' time or two per cent, cash, F. 0. B. All right, begin. No, begin you. No, you begin. Up. 'Em. Set. Set 'em up. The words and signs are right, Brother Snooks, he is a yard wide and all wool, and you can bet on him. Brother Crookston and I each lent the chap $5, and he left with many thanks and kind wishes. i ii i i . It is a genuine malady though more disagreeable than serious. Yet it should be taken note of. While the scientists are inquiring about the tone of the malady, those who are suffering the lassitude. nervousness and melancholia, that are its symptoms, should run the disease out of their systems by means of that more subtle scintist and folkourest?S. S. S. This is particularly necessary, since spring fevfer leaves the system in such condition that it succumbs readily to diseases that are more dangerous and less easily controlled. S. S. S. is a preventive as well as a remedy. A genius in Berlin has invented an apparatus by means of which daylight can be distributed into the darkest rooms.
