He was well known in onr county, having been engaged for many years prior to tbe war in the tanning business. For several years he ran the Central Hotel in Columbia. He bas been quite feeble for the past few years. He was a good citizen and sincere ! friend, and his death will be mourned by many onteide of hie family. ? * " Lexington and Hollow Creek Farmers Union. . Berley's on Saturday next February 2nd, 1889, at 10 o'clock a. m. and according to a unanimous resolution passed at the last meeting, all agents or dealers in fertilizers who wish to sell to tbe Union are respectfnlly invited to attend tbe meeting prepared to show tbe analysis that is labelled on the sacks of the guano, tbey handle, as well as their best terms for cash. C., on Friday I January 18th 1889: a Brother with an nn-1 tarnished shield, and with sentiments of I truth, charity and brotherly loye, "has I nr?? tr, ?w. nn discovered country M P?OOV\* V - V. from whose borne no traveler has ever returned. " During his painful sickness he bore his suffering with that patience, forbearance and cheerfulness that so truthfully illustrates the beauty of the chief tenets of our mystic tie. . He was born March 4th 1838 on Little Hollow Creek, in Lexington county, S. C., thus making his earthly pilgrimage fifty years, ten months and fourteen days. On the breaking out of the late war between the States, he enlisted as 1st Corporal in Company C, 15th Segiment of S. C. V., and gradually rose by promotion to the rank of chptain of his company?fought through many of the fiercest battles of "the war, and at the battle of Spotsylvania, C. H., Va., received a painful wound in his right hand.' He was captured by the enemy in the fall of 18(54 at Charleston, Ya., and imprisoned in Fort Delaware till after the close of the war?spending many days in that inhospitable abode. After the war he devoted his nndivided time and attention to the mercantile busi1 ness, and by unremitting diligence, economy and, perseverance amassed a fortune. He was raised to the sublime degree of a 1 Master Mason in Gilbert Hollo* Lodge No. 176 A*. *F\ -M'.'in November, 1881,aud was installed as Secretary of the Lodge > December 27th, 1881, and continued to discharge the duties of that office, with honor to himself aud pride to f lm fraternity t up to the time of his death. He was candid and courteous to all, and ' his generous nature, kindness and liberality .endeared him to his brethren and friends, and especially to the poor and needy, of whom, many reaped their living from his abundance. f On Sunday the 20th day of January, 1889 . his obsequies were performed in the pres euce of a great throug of his brethren, rela ) tives and friends. The Rev. John W 1 Neely delivered an interesting funeral sermon from John xi. chapter, 25-26 verses No part of the services were more impres * sive than the singing of the hymn, whicl t the deceased had requested to he sung a) I his funeral.
