Special to The State. a Bamberg, Nov. 20.?This town llfl was shocked Jond thrown into a state of excitement last night over to one of the boldest and most highhanded murders that has ever ? fr happened in this state. Nr. M. B. Varn, a prominent merchant of this place, left his store 'on Main street last night j*1 about 9 o'clock to go home. Ho 2 C lived in the south eastern part of town, on Carlisle street, nearly a ^ mile from the business portion of town. He did not arrivo at his usual hour, so about 9.30 o'clock ^ his wife became alarmed and started ont, accompanied by ono of her soo^, to see what was tho 80 matter. About .100 yards fiom her house, nearly in front of tho m residonce of Mr. G. P. Ilarmon, they stumbled over Mr. Varn's body lying on tho sidewalk on his faco in a pool of blood, with the ?r whole back of his head crushed m in, a ghastly sight. His skull m was fractured, ho was unconscious and never spoko afterwards. The alarm was raisod, several neighbors hurried to the scene ^ and the man so badly done to ft death was carried to his home. t,fc Physicians were hastily summoned tut nothing could be done and ho died at 10.15 o'clock. He ^ was hit twice in the back of the head with some heavy blunt in- _ strument, tho nature of which ban ^ not been determined. An axe lU fc handle and a heavy pioco of iron, a part of a buggy spring, apparent^ ly, were found in the street not 1* very far from the body, but no blood was on either. Two men evidently did tho kill- ^ ing as two different tracks were found at the body and on a vacant ci lot on the street near town whoro oi they had set down in tho weeds bi and watched for their victim to w pass. The governor yesterday offered reward of $200 for the appro* nsion of the murderer or murrers of M. B. Yarn ut Bamberg mrsday night. This makes a tal of $400, the citizens of that ace offering $200. Latest news om Bamberg states that no clue is yet deen found to the parties anted. Palletto regiment, that went from lis State, died at their respective omes [yesterday. Both of tho Id veterans were known in Charsston, having joined Company ' in this city, whieh was organiz1 by Mr. Louis F. Roborson, ho is now living, tho first man 1 South Carolina to volunteer for 30 Mexican war. Both died at 10 ago of 77 years. There are now only fourteen nrvivors of tho Palmetto regiicnt living, most of them being catlered'dVer the State. Of this umber two-are living in Charleson, "Judge O. 11. Levy and Mr. j. F. ltobcrtson. Mr. Brennocke iras the only survivor of the roginent living outside of the State. The last survivor of the Pals netto regiment will receive the tndrew Jackson silver cup, which vas presented to Gen. Jackson by he South Caroliua Legislature, rho cup was on exhibition at the >outh Carolina exposition hold lore in 1902. It is now held in Columbia.
