Prominent Merchant Waylaid and ^
Brutally Murdrred ?Mr. W.
B. Varn is the Victim.
Special to The State. a
Bamberg, Nov. 20.?This town
llfl
was shocked Jond thrown into a
state of excitement last night over
to
one of the boldest and most highhanded
murders that has ever ?
fr
happened in this state.
Nr. M. B. Varn, a prominent
merchant of this place, left his
store 'on Main street last night j*1
about 9 o'clock to go home. Ho
2 C
lived in the south eastern part of
town, on Carlisle street, nearly a ^
mile from the business portion of
town. He did not arrivo at his
usual hour, so about 9.30 o'clock ^
his wife became alarmed and
started ont, accompanied by ono
of her soo^, to see what was tho
80
matter. About .100 yards fiom
her house, nearly in front of tho m
residonce of Mr. G. P. Ilarmon,
they stumbled over Mr. Varn's
body lying on tho sidewalk on his
faco in a pool of blood, with the ?r
whole back of his head crushed m
in, a ghastly sight. His skull m
was fractured, ho was unconscious
and never spoko afterwards.
The alarm was raisod, several
neighbors hurried to the scene ^
and the man so badly done to ft
death was carried to his home.
t,fc
Physicians were hastily summoned
tut nothing could be done
and ho died at 10.15 o'clock. He ^
was hit twice in the back of the
head with some heavy blunt in- _
strument, tho nature of which ban ^
not been determined. An axe lU
fc
handle and a heavy pioco of iron,
a part of a buggy spring, apparent^
ly, were found in the street not 1*
very far from the body, but no
blood was on either.
Two men evidently did tho kill- ^
ing as two different tracks were
found at the body and on a vacant ci
lot on the street near town whoro oi
they had set down in tho weeds bi
and watched for their victim to w
pass. When ho came they fol- ni
i lowed a short distance until a tl
favorable opportunity for striking hi
i the fatal blow presented itself. ol
Mr. Varn usually took his le
i moBoy homo at night in a little F
' sack. He did this last night, o<
i counting it out in the presonco of w

town and a negro. tl
This sack was missing from the tl
, body. From examination of his
i cash book today it is supposed to si
have contained $8 or $10. a
4 In a small pocketbook in one of gi
1 his pockets was found some silver n
\ and a $5 bill. He also h:ul sotno t
( bills in another pocket, which I
f were not touched, the robbers no y
' doubt thinking ho had all his n
money in the sack. His watch

The shoes of each were taken n
