President.. ' Ml Depends on Angust Weather I] lltil High IVu'tti AtC Predicted for Cotton Kven With it Fhe- } nominally Ql.arge Crop. < In the opinion of brokers close- t Iv studying conditions, the com* t ing cotton yield cannot he pre dieted with any degree of sitis- t faction at this tiino. Weather 1 conditions the next 30 days to t>ix weeks will tell the tale. The fs'ct i that the acreage is the largest on i record this yeur is offset by the ' fact that the crop throughout the cotton belt is at least two weeks late. Favora.de weather in Au gust will send the yield up above highwuter mark, though it is predicted that even with an eleven and a half million bale crop the prices, on account of the present famine, will be high. Mr. T. II Wannamaker, when approached on the subject yesterday had this to say of conditions generally: "One peculiarity about the cotton business is that by mutual consent all the men who are engaged in it, are permitted to cn lertain positive convictions and to express their views quite empha- J tically oil all occasions, and should our s judgment prove wrong ten tunes to one that it is light, everybody is expected to see the 1 correct guess, and never mention the prophecies that failed to ma- 1 teriulize. "You have of course forgotten 1 those bearish views expressed by mo last fall, and I now rise to re j mat k that the developments in the ; cotton trade the present season , have astonished everyone. "llad it been admitted in the early part of tho season that the crop would approximate 11,000,000 bales, it would have been i conceded without argument, that ( 0 cents would lie a full price for cotton. We know that the crop * will fall very litlio short of 11,000,000, if it. does not exceed it, 1 yet the consumption has been on ( such an enormous scale that we practically have u famine, and strict tnaiding cotton is easily1 worth 13 1 iLcenfs, in spite of j the f?'jfihat millions of spindles' are idle, as the result of short sup- j plies. This condition makes the , progress of the gro ving crop of supreme interest to dealers and j spinners alike. There must be a yield of eleven and a half million bales of cotton in the minimum, or si continued curtailment of consumption. if prices are to bo kept within reasonable bounds the coming season. 4'The acreage is the largest on record by probably U to 4 per cent, and the consumption of for* tiliz^rs is also greater than ever before. Abnormally low temperature and excessive rains throughout the belt, were very uofavora* bio for cotton up to about the middle of June. Since that time, however, the conditions have been quite favorable, and with continued good seasons and a late fall, a la'go crop may reasonably bo expected. The crop however is one to three weeks late through the entire belt, and the chances rather favor a moderate yield. The crop is now pnssing through a most critical reriod. and the next six weeks will largely determine the yield. Wo must have plenty of moisture through the month of August, and should drought develop over any oxtensive area, there wotdd be a sensa? tional advance in the new crop months.''
