THE LEDGER. Thurlow Carter, EDITOR AND MANAGER. WEDNESDAY, JULY 1, 1903. N e k r o Excursionist* Robbed While In Charlotte. fill) Robertson and Ish rhotupm>D, two Kershaw darkies who went up to Charlotte on the excursion lust week, were cleverly robbed while in the queen city by Kmauuo! William1* and Ren Hen (bo son t \r o Clmrlotln nn o -o crooks. The Observer thus tells how it was done: Thompson was''skinned''in a sa loon. He asked a companion for a chow of tobacco and when the man could not give it to him he was accosted by Williams, who bowed politely and passed the tobacco around. Williams then took Thompson aside, and, showing him some printed cards, said: "If you will distribute 100 of these among your friends in South Ca rolina you will get a premium worth $20, a gold aatch, diamond : c iit i _ ring, or onmn iv v> esson revolver, (iive ine 50 cents now and von will get a premium to-day." Thompson was almost dazed at the ease with which the premium could he gotten and while he ex amined the cards he took oiu a $2 bill. Williams took the money and handed it to Henderson with the request that it be changed. Henderson went off and was not again soen by Thompson until ho was arrested. Williams soon left also, apparently to search for Hen~ derson. But Thompson was not altogether green and, suspecting something, he applied to Sergeant Farrington for aid. Williams alone played practically the same trick on Jim Robertaon, the other excursionist. Soon after the police were notified, Ofli? cer Shields arrested Williams, who gave the name of Charles Jones. Later Henderson was arrested and both were tried at a special session of the police court in the evening, and will spend CO and 30 days on the gang. _ Items From Kershaw Era. Dr. J. E. W.
