Lingie, Committee. The Smallpox Situation The excitement over the smallpox has about subsided. Two cases have been reported in the cotton mill section southwest of town since our last issue. Mr. Dunlap is the only person in the corporate limits of the town, so far as we have heard to contract the disease and he contracted it at woik on the mill and is now able to sit up. The prompt vaccina tion of everybody in the town is relied on to prevent the spread of the disease. More than one thousand of the town'spopulation was vaccinated Sunday and Monday and the physicians had Used several hundred points prior to that. Practically everybody in the town is vaccinated, making *the second time in live years that most of ihe population has had to go through the ordeal. No serious cases have developed at the cotton mill. Dr. Maclcey has been put in charge oy uie otate hoard or neaith. Vacillation has been going on o o there since Monday. \Vo hope the disease is about at its rows end here. Marsh Sentenced to Death. ? R. A. Barrett Gets Six Months on the Chain Gang. Special to Charlotte Observer. Monroe, Nov. 27.?Judge Timberlako adjourned court this afternoon after completing the ( business of the term. Before adjourning the judge pronounced sentenco of death up- , on the negro man, John Marsh, | just tried and convicted of crim* ^ inal assault upon a respectable J colored school teacher. Marsh is sentenced to he hanged January ( 6th, between the hours of 10 and 2. ills eotinscl took an appeal. , Public sentiment is to the ctfect that the judgment is a rigbtenus one. Judge Timberlake's return here would be very salutary. To-day he sentenced li. A. Barrett, a well-known whiskey dealer, who has helped to make a section of the county nigh uninhabitable, to six months on the chain gang, though ho has been in court often and over, he has never hnd such a sentenco as this before. Will Green, another character of similar denieunor from this neighborhood, was sentenced to six months on the chain gang and to pay all the costs in his case, or pay all costs and leave the county within 30 days. Tho Uobbed Preacher. Mr. Editor:?I have received many inquiries ; and expressions of sympathy from all over the country concerning my misfortune in the town of Laucuster, S. C , on the night of tho 17th ol Nov. 1 wish to reply through the Lancaster papers. To you who have asked some questions about Sheriff Hunter, 1 am pleased to say that tho Sheriff did more than his duty us an officer ; he stood by me, in my distress, like a friend aud brother. The police force, tho kind editors and all the good people of Lancaster did for mo all that I could have expected. To some inquirers I wish to say that I believo that there are a lot of as good men and women in the town of Lancaster as any where this side of Heaven. Lancaster has not harmed me. As a town, compared with towns, I regard Lancaster as one of my best friends. The town is as anxious to bring the robber to justice as I am. Many have been very free and uugarded in expressing their opinions as to who it might have been that! robbed me, and how it might have been accomplished. Their expressions have been quite varied and conflicting. I appreciate all judicious elfort9 to ap- j prebend the guilty, but I ^ very mucli regret that any one | may lose friends, cause themselves and others unpleasantness in a way that is no help to me ncr uny oue elsb. I have answered many questions respecting this robbery, some of which I thought very foreign and unbecoming, but I have not told any one who I think got my money. I desire, as near as possible, to presume everybody with whom I am acquainted, to bo innocent, until 1 have evidence showing some one to be guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. I can not, now, suy who got my money?hard earned as it was by a devoted wife, faithful children and myself. 1 .may never know who it was until tho groat da)- when all hi Iden things shall he made manifest. May tho Lord have mercy and help that poor soul to repent, and steal no more, and prepare for a better world. If the guilty ono reads this communication, let me say to you that I wish you eternally well, but unless you repent with repentance great enough to cause you to return my money, your chance for Heaven is slim ; and your chances to be appre- j bended and duly rewarded is I hopeful, and every day being prayed for. If you will return my money before any oue gat9 on hot track of you, I will never | axpos'> you nor put you to anv trouble, but if you wait until some detective gots on pursuit of you, for the offered reward, I would not stop him for twice the amount of which I was robbed, but let the detective and the law have foil sway. * Respectfully, hopefully and prayerfully submitted, W. Tribute of respect from the Lancaster Council Family Protective Union, Mo. 159, to the memory of our worthy President, j W. S. L. Porter. In his death our council has lost one who from its organization has been our faithful President, one we found to be loyal to tho order and true to each mem j ber. In his last sickness ho never complained, hut had a kind word for every one. Though comparatively a young mau, he had won for himself an enviable position! j before the people of his county. Our hearts ure sad when we rea- ( lize that we shall see his face no 1 more or hear his voice giving j good council to the members of our order; and yet, mingled with the sadness there is joy also that he has won his crown and will be forever with the Lord. iSinco we desire as a council to record our Thanksgiving to God j for the life and work of Brother Porter and to express our sorrow at his death I Resolved, 1st. That we bow in humble submission to the will 1 of our Heavenly Father who gave 1 and who hath taken away and < who doeth all things well. 2nd. That we see in the death of our Brother?a call to ourselves to be more zealoua nnrl faithful in the work of our Master, for the time is short and night is soon coming when 1 work on earth will he ended. 3rd. That we express to the fam- , ily of Brother Porter our sincere sympathy for them in this their great affliction. | 4th. That a page in our min' ute book be inscribed to the memory of Brother Porter, and that a copy of these resolutions be sent to the family of the deceased brother, and a copy fur fished the county papers with the request to publish.
