Frightful Disaster in Heart of Great Multitude. Eleven Men Killed Outright. Fifty Injured. New York, Nov. 4. ?By a series of explosions of pyrotechnic bombs and other fireworks to night, among the vast multitude gathered in Madison Squaieto witness the ascension of an air ship and the display* of the election returns, eleven persons were killed outright, many being blown almost to pieces and at '.east fifty injured, many of them fatally. It is estimated that at least 3U,000 persons thronged the Square a the tune of the explosions which were succeeded by a frightful panic in which hundreds were thrown down and trampled under foot. Five hundred policemen and all the ambulances in the city were instantly summoned and the dying and those most seriously injured were removed to the hospitals. In addition to these many of the wounded were taken uway by friends. LUCK IN THIItTEKN By sending 13 miles Wm. In Anderson county, last Thurgday, two Negroes were caught in the act of robbing a farmer, and rather than go to jail they offered to accept any punishment the fanner might inflict. The men weic taken into a field and stripped to the waist. There is no whipping post law in South Carolina, but this did not interfere with the plans f jr the lashing. 1? each man was given a buggy trace, and they fought each other ( until the blood began to flow. A big crowd gathered to watch the duel of whipping. A neighbor otlhe man who had been robbed acted as referee and he made the Negroes break clean when they clinched. Under the rules the contest had to continue until one Negro had given the other 100 lasbes. Foul tips were not counted. The Negroes were in bad shape when the tight ceased and they went off to bed. No arrests were made. 0URE8 RHEUMATISM OR OA TARRH IN A DAY?TREATMENT FREE. The Atlanta Journal contained iho following editorial one day last week which may prove of interest to our farmers: The ability to raise a bale of cotton to the acre is, probably, the height of very progressive farmer's ambition. Anv suggestion bearing upon this problem, therefore, is of every vital interest, not only to the farmer, but the public generally. In this connection, Mr. Frank Woodall, a prominent Jones county planter, offers his brothors tho bene tit of his long experience along an entirely new line ot cotton cultivation. He tells the Macon Tele graph that he larely fails to make a bale to the ncie, and his claim is corroborated by local warehousemen and other- who have watched his methods for a number of years. 4'My cotton never suffers from excessively hot weather," says Mr. Woodall, and tho secret of this is ho plants his cotton in tho water furrow or in other words, just as :oru is planted. The effect of this, he says, is that the tap root quickly strikes moisture and it goes right on to growing, and then the lateral roots spread out into soft earth, j and are never disturbed during cultivation. Mr. Woodall says he lias occasionally experimented, planting some of|his cotton in beds as his neighbors have done, and some in the water furrows, with j the result that the weather would \ ruin one field while tho cotton in ' the water furrows would thrive. He has made as high as 33 bales < on '20 acres, he declares. Mr. Woodall, who is evidently an ob servant farmer, explains how he , came to adopt this method of cul i tivation by saying that he once placed some green cotton seed as a fertilizer under his corn, but , the seed sprouted and grew in the same furrow with the corn, baffling all of his elforts to bury tho plant. Finally, being struck by the vigor of the plants as compared with cotton in other fields planted in ; the old wuy, ho concluded to give it a chance and see what it would do. The re*ult was astonishing. The cotton in the water furrows with the corn yielding an average per stalk more than double that of any other < n the farm. He decided that ho had thus ae cidentally discovered the proper way to grow cotton, and finally abaudoned the old method entirety. Many of his neighbors, he says, followed his example, and invariably secured similar re suits. He cultivates his cotton entirely with a plow, the hoe hands never going into the field except to chop the cotton to a stand. Jf Mr. Woodall is correct in his theory of cotton growing there is no question that he lias rondered the farmers of the South a great service in making it known.
