Quaint Stories of Some Eccentric Mountain Folk "A Living; Monument tp Liquor." Special to The State. Greenville, Oct. 8.?"Martin from the Creek" is a character whose eccentricities have been bo long known around Greenville that his fame, like the prophet's honor, is not bo. great hereabouts. Martin is proud of his record as a Republiean and as a consumer of corn liquor. The writer met Martin on the street yesterday?it being the first time he had had that pleasure for many months ?and a good deal of whiskey can be consumed in a few months by one whose capacity is good. This was about irhftl wild unwl* "Well, Ma-tin, how are you! They tell rae you've quit drinking and come over to the Democrats!" "Who told you that* Name the man! I'd like to confront him!" "It isn't so?" "Certainly not. But 1 have about quit drinking. I'm gettin' old and eight or ten drinks a day sets me up pretty high." Knowing that Martin claims to hare an estimate of the quantity of whiskey he has drunk during his lifetime, a calculation kept by his good wife, the writer asked for the latest figures: "Four hundred and eighty-onebarrels at 45 gallons a barrel," aid Martin. "How much does that come tot" it was figured out that according to this estimate "Martin from the Creek" has laid away 20,745 gallons of whiskey, good, better and best?for Martin says none of it is bad. If the calculation is carried out it will be seen that in order to have consumed this mucQ wmskey id his 70 or 75 years Martin must have averaged several pints a day. This ia by no meang impossible and Martin's claim to being " a living monument to liquor" is uot. so preposterous after all. The torn? perance advocate could figure out a fine less from the amount of money this quantity of liquor represents. While Martin has "about quit drinking," he says Teddy is all right and sure to be elected?he is a Republican still, it seems, though he will take whiskey that comes from either a Republican or Democratic 'still. "JOHNNIE BRIERS." Johnnie Beiers is another Greenville character, but quito on the opposite line from "Martin from the Creek," Johnnie, mgam I fODKING AIL Ml L IS 'AN ABSOLUTELY AND OVER AOAIN YV/HERE like Martin, is a Republican but his pride is in two other things, bis record as a member of the Hampton legion end his religion. Beiers is a native of Germany and served, 1 believe, in tho German army. At any rate he came to this country in time to fight for South Carolina in the War for Southern Independence. His admiration for "Mart" Gary, un der whom he served, is unbound* ed, but he admits his general had one fault?he would "cuss." Ifor along time Johnnie Beiers was general delivery clerk in the postofiice and in those days he knew everybody in this section and everybody knew him. Being a Republican he lost his job some years ago under a Democra lie administration and has not had the easiest sort of time since and his health has been bad. Knowing these facts some of the Republicans must have wanted to help bim along, for Johnnie told me an incident this morning that seem to prove it. In his DutchEnglish ne said that he had been offered a position of some sort in a government distillery and his reply to the letter from Columbia was something like this: You may know that for four years I was a Confederate soldier and fought the Y ankees. Since that time I've been a soldier of the Cross and fighting the devil. 1 can't go over to the devil's side now and hare anything to do with making whiskay. I don't want your job. Yours truly, Johnnie Beiers. That's the refusal as close as it can be recalled from Johnnie's recital in his broken English. Jas. A. Judging the Value of an Ad. by a Single Insortioin It is the mistake of one's lifetime to thinK that ho can prov? the virtue of advertising by mere trial of it for a single time, liesuits are not reached by a single effort. Nor does one swallow prove that spring is hero. The convincing of moo, the bringing over of others to one's views, comes only of persistent effort. Men ure not variable, like the winds: neither ure they uncertain liko the weather. They have ideas of their own, and it is needful that they be won in order tn Kf> nnnnnoi-A>l 1' ?S?l.i. Success to advertising comes precisely as success in ishiug and in every serious matter of life ? through patience, perseverance and a determined purpose to sue* ceed. One might try the same advertising medium a half dozen times with success, and the seventh effort might result in returns richly compensative. He who 'days down" quickly in the advertising lino is not likely to succeed.
