THE LETTiER. Pliurlow 3 Carter, EDITOR AND MANAGER. WKDSE^DAY, JULY 2, 1902. [For The Ledger. Interesting Letter From a Lancaster Boy in Parching Texas. Mrt. Kihtok:?Thinking some of uiv friends in South Carolina would like to hear from this part of Texas 1 will write you a short letter. About a month ago the crops looked very promising out they have been eut off considerably 011 account of dry weather. Corn is almost a total failure. People are cutting it for roughness. Some people will not get their seed back on land .that makes from tifty to seventy-five bushels to the acre a seasonable year. Cotton is looking well considering the dry weather. If it does not rain soon it will soon pnich up. Wheat and oats were very short. Land that makes from thirty to forty bushels of wheat a seasonable year onlymade from six to ten and land that makes from fifty to seventy-five bushels of oats per acre only made from ten to fifteen. We have had but very little ram this year?haven't had any : t all this month. Water is very scarce. People on the black land have to haul it for five and six mile?. People in the little towns have to buy their water. They give a dollar and a half a load, old hot tank water at that The grass in the pastures has all dried up. The stockmen are riding nearly all the time driving their cattle from one pasture to another where ever they can lind water. The fruit is all very small the trees look like they are going to die. We had a ripe watermelon today, the 24th. Messrs. Burr and John Hags dale of Cryer Creek, formerly of South Carolina, were down at Dresden visiting friends last Sunday. Thev seem to he taking lifeeasy. Mr. Burr lL, is lining around an old widow and .John is flying around tier daughter. Mr. W. S. Barber is also taking life easy. Ho has a new turnout, drives a pair. He says there isn't but one girl that can rifle with him. Mr. S. L. Dixou, who has been spending a while with his sister, Mrs. K. K. Blake, left a few days ago for Jacksonville. Mr. B. S. Perry, of Angus, formerly of S. C.. is coming to Dresden next Sunday to see his best girl. Messrs. J..O. Rivers, W. II. Green, J. D., and C. F. Tillman left Dresden in a covered wagon for the territory. Success to The Ledger. South Carolina Boy. Dresden, Texas, June I902. THE GKOKulA THING LOOSE. i It wns expected by knowing t ones tliut tins Edgefield meeting ! would not, except in its reflex i action, be a solemn occasion. In genuine Edgefield spirit, long confined and non-riven asunder, it surpassed, so the old campaigners a Hi r in; anything ever seen even in South Carolina. This was occasioned by the mouthy and most vociferous tempest war of mouths i and of noise between the rival factions of Tnlbert and Tillman. I rtu uxueiiy minutes arter c;ol. ! 1 illtnun waft introduced, tint* how* jling and yelling was to persistent* Iv miintained as to effectually stop I even attempts at speaking. Many times when the roar of howling I ? voices were at the utmost extreme of frenzied, shrieking it was porifoet'y patent that what was once ! popularly supposed to have "broke I loose in Georgia" had permanent [ ly establishe 1 headquarters in 10 lgefi< Id court house, South Carolina. I'ho yelling began immediately at the close of Ansel's and for some time cheers and counter cheers for Talbert and Tillman prevented Heyward, whowas to follow, from speaking. He <4id speak and when ho stopped an i said, "My honored friend Talbert j came to my town and spoke, so did my distinguished friend Tillman, and no one yelled for Heyward? the cheers of the house greeted him. Col. Talbert was received with most cordial enthusilasin but tin*counter cheering for Talber^and Tillman grew so turbulent and confusing that not one word could bo heard before he stopped speaking. Tillman could do absolutely nothing. No appeal h id any effect. The noise grew louder at frenzied intervals and then decreased when throats could no longer bear the strain; to yell again wbon renewed strength came. For exactly 43 minutes Col Tillman faced tho crowd and only stopped when it became easily apparent that the rival factions had no idea of stopping their whooping and yelling. There wore a few drunken men in the crowd but not much anger was visible, tho reporter's clniir and table were upset when Col. Tillman's friends rushed up with a crown of (lowers, put it on his head and boie him in theii arms out 011 the square. The ri Vlll ri Vl'lISS (fl-oof flint in n #ntn ...... v ?>?? ^ ? A ' storm of incessant cheers, hurrahs ' and cries for TalberL and Tillman were heard with little or no cessation and human beings presented the humiliating spectacle of crazed inebriates. It is impossible, unless with a bunch of dynamite and giant powder washed down with a tabasco cocktai' to do justice to whit transpired. > In Chesterfield County. . If the long wanted rain does not come soon the corn crop will bo a fail? uro. Cotton is suffering only , slightly at present. The lumber trade of this county is getting rather extensive, with so I n n * 1 many mills scattered about i 11 1 li forests, there is always great dunN ger from forest fires. Yesterday j evening a large fire which was ra- j ? o ging in the forest southwest of ! .I hero came near destroying the large mill of the Chesterfield luui-j bor company, owned by Stevens^ Son of this place and Cheraw. ; [lad it not been for the opportune arrival upon the scene of Messrs. Walter Stevens and Hugh Tiller with the entire force of hands employed in the shipping yard here the mill would have gone up in the ilames. As it was it was only by the hardest efforts that the entiro plant was saved. W. L. Harris to be Postmaster at Charleston. I Washington, duly 2.? The President has decided to appoint \V. L. Harris postmaster at Charleston, S. C. Mr. Harris was nominated for the otliee some weeks ago, but the nomination was withdrawn on the lodging of a protest thrt lie had made an ath davit of citizenship in New York State, and that he was not entitled lo vote under the State law. The President has since been sat isfied that the best business inter- ' ests of Charleston still favor Harris' appointment and that there is no legal bar whatever to his taking office thongh he cannot vote until next December. He has adopted Charleston as a permanent rejg^cnce. The commission will po issued to-morrow. The Fort Mill, S* C., Times says: I Just why Anderson county? one of the wealthiest and most prosperous counties of the State? ' has sent Josh Ashley to the Leg- ! islature so often is a question fre- ! quently asked. Ashley is a big, burly, uneducated fellow who is in no wise fitted for membership in that body. Not satisfied with being a member of the lower branch of the Legislature, however, ho asks the voters of Anderson countv to send him to the Senate. He is opposed by J. K. Hood, an attorney of the city of Anderson. The Times knows nothing of the ability of Air. Hood, but he must indeed he an indifferent, citizen if he isnit an improvement over Josh Ashley. Anderson, county should chloroform Josh'tvambition. The voters of Anderson county ure probably, in u lesser degree, following tho political example I set them by tho State at large, in j sending Ashley to Columbia. The chloroform idea, however, appears to bo a pretty good one and it could doubtless be used to advantage for larger game, to the benefit of South Carolina and tho i South.?Charlotte Observer.
