Governor of Smith Carolina for Daniel Gould, alias Thomas Muddrey, colored, who 20 years ago was convicted of murder in Anson county. Pending an appeal to the Supreme Court ho fled. Not until a few days ago was he dis covered end returned. He is now in jail at Georgetown. His case presents points of interest. A man who gave information as to his identification and arrest said very gravely that all that was necessary was to bring him back to Anson county and hang him. Ho added with equal gravity * hat he thought Gould might object to returning under these circumstances; that is without requisition. Now then, under what proceedings will Gould be hanged i Will ho have to be re-sentenced in Anson ? Or will ?t be sufficient for the clerk of the Supremo Court to certify to the Governor the onin - "I ion of the court in Gould's case. The Govornor thereupon issuing a death warrant, us usual iu appealed cases? nice-questions of 'law, etc., which Governor Aycock and the Attorney General will pass upon. In the criminal court in Spar-* tanhurg Thursday morning Dr. 8. S .Daniel, who was convictod of securing goods under filse ptetenses, was sentenced to 15 months in the penitentiary and pay a fine v of $125. Daniel gave a mortgage to the Andrews Mnsie and Fnrm tureCo., of Charlotte, inpayment for a piano. The mortgage was discovered to have been invalidated by action of the mortgagor,and Daniel was prosecuted. The audience to which ho made his brief nddress was a brilliant one. The galleries were bunked to the doors and almost two-thirds of the members were In their seats on the floor. The Speaker's appreciative words to the members in thanking them touched a responsive cordund they gave him a remarkable demonstrntion of their friendship and good will. It was taken lip bv the correspondents in tho press gallery over 1he Speaker's chair and by the spectutois in the surrounding galleries and soon the Vast hall was ringing with the swelling chorus. Standing in front of the clerk's desk, he, too, joined i in the songs and there was a wild " scene when Genornl Ilooker, of Mississippi, the old one-armed Confederate veteran, took his place by the side of the Speaker j and together they sang "Dixie." Mr. Candler, a Mississippi Democrat, jumped upon a de^k and let ? out a yell of Jubilation that, fairly shook the ratters. For almost half an hour 'the jubilation continued. All this time the spectators remainod standing in the gil. leries watching the animated scene below and joining in the siuging. 1 The adjournment came at the end of a soven and a half hours' * session, during which much minor business was transacted. In all 70 bills and resolutions were pass- ^ ed. On this vote the matter went buck to conference between tho two Houses. At the night session Mr. Cannon present ed the report of the conference on tho general deficiency hill. The directors of The Exposition I were delighted this morning when tftev learned that The Exposition relief bill had passed the house of Representatives last night. The Passage of the bill means much for The Exposition for it will practIically pay otT all the c reditors of the company and with the money 1 that is expected to be realized from the sale of The Exposition property it is heliovod that the 'company ? will ho freed entirely from debt.
