Hartzog Resign*, Rut j Rourtl Will Not I'jiss on Resignation Till June Meeting. ] Special to Greenville News. Calhoun, S. C., May 10.?The ] hearing in the matter of the reinstatement of tho Sophomores of Clem son College was concluded J last night. The case against President Hartzog was set for 0 o'clock this morning, hut after 1 tho meeting was opened the cadet 1 committee announced that they 1 were willing to leave the matter 1 with tho trustees. ' This action was brought about by the statement seuiuofliciully made, that President Hurtzog nad sent in his s V ( resignation a week ago to take efP O ^ feet at tho pleasure of tho board. It is understood that tho board ' will act en his resignation at the i r .luuo meeting. n c The meeting this morning adjourucd early and the trustees held 1 a secret session to make up their verdict in the two cusestried. In the first, that of Cadet Thorn well, ' who was suspended, tho decision v was that he boTcinstuted und the 1 puuisumcni remitted. In the Sophomore case the entire class was giveu permission to apply for reinstatement and will be received as students in good standing ' O O with no punishment attached. I Adjournment followed immed- f iately and most of the board left I on the 1 o'clock train. The trou- !, ble is considered ended. The 1 cadets feel that they have been fairly treated by the board and are satislied. The committee of Sophomores have decided to ad vise their class to return to col- ! lege at once and have themselves reentered. The decision of the board of trustees was unanimous and the 1 statement which was prepared by ( a committee of tho boaad was read ' out to the audience by Senator ' Tillman. The report of the board ! of trustees thus announced con- ! tains a severe reprimand of the 1 faculty because of their hasty, unconsidered action in tho Thorn well ' case. Senator Tillman, commenting upon the report, said that the trustees had been putting the screws to the faculty because of tho lux discipline which had become prevalent; they had certainly by their action in this matter reversed their policy and had gone to'the other extreme. The report, however, while ad mitting the sophomores to apply for reentrance to tho college, con(1 Amnti tl*A 1 ' V4WUI??o tuu tiuaft puveroiJ xor IDsubordination and tho whole stu dost body urns given to understand distinctly that in the future their proper and only course in the matter of grievances was to submit them to the board of trus- < tees, and that hereafter such con- ! duct as had been indulged in by 1 the Sophomores would not lie con doned ?ven if it became necessary ' , I to take such action as would in- j duce the whole student body to i leave the college. '? i In treating the case of Cadet 1 I Thornwell individually, the report , goes on to say that it is apparent ' from the evidence, that Thornwell i was guilty of nothing more than j an indiscretion, and his act had heretofore not even been considered an offence by the members of tho clashes; that usage had ma le it tho rule for students to get their ! supplies as Thornwell was obtaining these test tubes, and that the faculty acted too precipitately without a yroper digestion of the facts. The report, while condemning " r I the action ol the bophmijore claws I as an oct of insubordination, roc- I >gnizo'l with approval t.lia ganerun sympathy with ilu'ir comrade \ hi< li had prompted it i'ho act ?t" insiiltordinntion, t :?.* report lays, wowhl tu? condomd iit tlii-< :aso tnjc:ui"*c il was the lil'si of l i ... ..t i...:.. _ .u_ A.HOC 41(11! C., News is a close friend uud warm supporter of 8enator McLauriu, and what it says as to his policy for the future may bo assumed to be said with some sort of authority. What his course with reference to the South Carolina senatorship will bo was left in some doubt by his open i letter, which was givon to the 1 press last Monday, and this from an editoral in The Greenville News is therefore of the more interest: I Senator McLuurin has not dec' ided to stand for re election as as ( ' independent candidate. He has [ decided not to run as a candidate ; before the Democratic primaries : and in making this announcement he withdraws entirely from the senatorial race either as a regular Ot or as an independent. t i Under our system of primary elections it would be utterly use~ 1 less for any man to attempt to run independent even for a State office. I But in the case of a candidato for ! the I'nited States Senate it would I be worse than useless. No one 1 understands this better than Sena- j i utor McLaurin and he is the last ! man in our opinion who wculd run as an independent oven were the i conditions such as to render this action on his part in any way advisable. ?
