Little K 'ck, Ark., Feb. 5. ? The town of Clarksviile, Johnson I county, is jjreut I v excited over it I hold and successful bank robbery which occurrt'il e.irly today wbou the vault of the Bank of C'lai ksville was dynamited and looted l>y five ttr six uihii. Sheriff Johu II. Powers was shot a id killed hy the robbers while attempting to I frustrate their designs. Tho exact amount secured t>y the rohbers is not known, tint it is supposed to he bat ween $1,000 and $2,000. Sheriff Powers, who roomed in a building adjoining that of the bunk was awakened shortly before 3 o'clock by a terrific explosion in the hank. Seizing a pistol in each band he rushed to the hank. 1'he re >hers, who numbered five or six men, were evidently prepared for him, us they opened j lire the moment he appeared. The 1 I officer was wounded at tho first volley hut stood bis ground and returned the fire, sending half a dozen bullets at the robbers. The wounded sheriff managed to get back to bis room where he died 1 within 20 miuutes. A train of blood leading from the bank is construed to moan that Powers injured one or more of the robbers. He was 1 shot three times himself and any otne of the wounds would bare proven fatal. Gov. Davis tonight offered 1 reward of $5,000 for the arrest and conviction of the robbers and the Arkansas Hunkers' association 1 offered a similar reward of $5,000. These offers will be supplemented by additional rewards by the people of Clarksville. A vigorous search is being made for thn fugitives, but it is believed they have escaped into the mountains. Sheriff Powers was one of the best known officers in Arkansas. ' He had been sheriff of .Johnson county for 12 years and would have been renominated without opposition for another term in the ! Democratic primary Feb. 1. 11a had tha reputation af being brave and fearless and had run down a t large number of criminals. All ! towns between hare and Fort > Smith have been wired of tha i robbery and no effort will ba 1 spared to captura the man, although a battle is expected should the fugitives ba overtaken. Clarks ville is 50 miles east of Fort Smith on the Little Rock and Fort Smith railroad. It is thought tha rob. bars escaped north into the mountain fastness of Newton county where there is neither railroad or 1 telegraph facilities. notich.
