the robbers while attempting to

amount secured t>y the rohbers
is not known, tint it is supposed
to he bat ween $1,000 and $2,000.
Sheriff Powers, who roomed in a
building adjoining that of the bunk
was awakened shortly before 3
o'clock by a terrific explosion in
the hank. Seizing a pistol in
each band he rushed to the hank.
1'he re >hers, who numbered five
or six men, were evidently prepared
for him, us they opened
j lire the moment he appeared. The 1
I officer was wounded at tho first
volley hut stood bis ground and
returned the fire, sending half a
dozen bullets at the robbers. The
wounded sheriff managed to get
back to bis room where he died 1

having used dynamite te break (
open the vault door, having established
a guard armed with Winchesters
outside the bank, they
seemingly had anticipated interferuncs
from the sheritT as they
must have known of his presence
nearby. A train of blood leading
from the bank is construed to
moan that Powers injured one or
more of the robbers. He was 1
shot three times himself and any
otne of the wounds would bare
proven fatal.
Gov. Davis tonight offered 1
reward of $5,000 for the arrest
and conviction of the robbers and
the Arkansas Hunkers' association 1
offered a similar reward of $5,000.
These offers will be supplemented
by additional rewards
by the people of Clarksville.
A vigorous search is being made
for thn fugitives, but it is believed
they have escaped into the mountains.
Sheriff Powers was one of the
best known officers in Arkansas.
' He had been sheriff of .Johnson
county for 12 years and would
have been renominated without
opposition for another term in the
! Democratic primary Feb. 1. 11a
had tha reputation af being brave
and fearless and had run down a
t large number of criminals. All
! towns between hare and Fort
> Smith have been wired of tha
i robbery and no effort will ba
1 spared to captura the man, although
a battle is expected should
the fugitives ba overtaken. Clarks
ville is 50 miles east of Fort Smith
on the Little Rock and Fort Smith
railroad. It is thought tha rob.
