CM Aug. 17.? The Railroad situation today as a result of the heavy rains is worse than it has been at any time during the downpour of the past week. Another big slide occurred on Saluda mountain today. There are several washouts and that the roadbed is entirely submerged by Water for a Inner di&tanrtA ? * ? ported to he the state of affairs on the entire line from Spartanburg to Asheville. There is serious trouble reported on the Asheville line between | Black Mountain and Hound Knob. By a cave in of n tunnel ene , man lost his life and this morn. ' ings trains were delayed about 10 hours. The longest tunnel on the ' mountain, Swannanoa, 1,800 feet in length, began caving in at one end. A wrecking crew and working train was sent out to repair the damages. Section Master Robinson was at work in the tunnel and in the very midst of the slide, when the working train . pushed its way through running over and killing him instantly. Every effort possible is being made by the Southern officials to 1 get the readbcd cleared. All | wrecking crews and bridge forces are at work as well as all section sen in the division. On that day he and < mother negro named Oney Legg 1 antered the house of one Lemuel 1 Garner, colored, and stole goods \y to the value of $3.87. Jenkins I s;ot away and was never arrested] !.
