Armour to Enter the Field. j The State The recent purchase of a number of the cotton oil mills in this! and other southern States by the Virginia-Carolina Chemical company ha* necn the chief theme of conversation during the past weok among the mill men, and many theories have been advanced us to what will be the ultimate outj come of this combination of cotton oil mill ptopertios. A well known gentleman who has been connected with the oil mill business for a number of years, I ut is in no wav connected with the Virginia Carolina Chemi oal company, stated yesterday that he considers it a wise move on the part of the Virginia-Carolina company to p rchase these mills, and in doing s? they were but providing themselves with a plentiful ! supply of meal to t?e used in the I manufacture of their commercial ammoniated fertilizers. It is well known that moal coo,, tains ammonia in a desirable proportion and has been extensively , used far a number of years for this purpose. The Virgioia-Caiolina Chemical company heretofore owning no mills had to rely upon blood and fish scrap to uup 1 ply their ammonia, the farmer is largely produced by Armour & Co., and Swift & Co., and oftentimes the supply is inadequate to the demand. It is well known that Armour is erecting a large fertilizer factory near Atlanta unit nrnnnonu t? on?oi actively in competition with the Virginia-Carolina Chemical company in the manufacture and sale of fertilizer in the south; apart ! from this lioyster has two large factories in Virginia and is erect ing a new and extensive one near | Columbia and these, to say noth! ing of the other independent factories, will make it lively for the I fertilizer trust as well as con sum j ing large (juautiti* s of blood, which supply at times must be i limited, therefore the purchase of these oil mills in the cotton belt became almost a necessity. | The gentleman went on to say that from his knowledge of the j Virginia-Carolina Chemical eom1 pany's people ho believed that they would deal fairly with the people of the south, and would I not, because it is now in their power, run the price of guano and meal up, nor pay for cotton seed less than thoir market value. . / i I- ? 1 ' ' ~vjlie uung sure,' n? added, 4-there will l>e no wild-eat busii rivs^ in the cottonseed market this i fall, yet there will he plenty of compet ition."' The Virginia Carolina ('hemical company, ho thought, did not desire the owner: ship of all the i mills in the State, hut these ilesI | iring to sell will tind in them a ready purchaser. Knough of the 1 mills have already hoon secured to 'answer the company's demands | for the present. The farmeis in tho eastern part of the Stato are watching coming r> developments with interest and after all are mastcs of the situation. I: they are not offered what 1 . they consider a fair price tor their cotton >oed they need not sell hut can use the seed us a fertilizer which after all is the heat manure obtainable. 4'Sell your seed and buy meal" has done much to improveriah our ! lands. The seed is sold in th? fall, the money spent and when "seed time" comes again there is no money to buy the meal?for meal is always cash?a little acid and kanit is beught on a lien in I t stead and the poor crops all over J tbe State tells the re?t of the story. It has 1 treelv criticised him, and, at times, harshly condemned him, but it does justice to his magnifr 1 cent Fourth of .July oration in Spartanburg. Of thatHpeech it 1 says: 1 "He touched upon all of the ' vital issues that are now before the country, expansion, ship sub- ' sidy and other issues that have 1 grown up in recent years. Sena- ^ tor McLaurin showed a thorough ^ familiarity with the subjects dis- * cussed, and his address wan en- ' tertaining throughout. The large 1 audience listened for two hours with rant attention, onvincr <r??n i ? n r & oral apnluus* at times. He made a splendid impression. i "While the Herald does not j agree with everything the sena~ tor said, v\e reali/.e that his argu* i ments were logical an I that a great L deal can be said on his side of the t question. His defense of the ship ^ subsidy bill wus particularly clear v and convincing." That last sentence is especially * just. There is more doubt upon 1 the subsidy question than upon any other of the doctrines advocated by McLaurin, because there is less information upon that subject. But when McLaurin speaks | i as he did at Spartanburg, and receives the uttention he was given ? thore, he makes converts, because 1 of the strength *?f his arguments, tlie is conducting a campaign ot * education, devoid of personalities J and abuse, and it is having much effect.?Columbia Record. fc Millions Invested in Texas. , Houston, Texas., duly 5.? f Charters were tiled today at A us- * tin for the Houston ()il Company, ^ with a capitalization of $30,000,000, and the Kirhy LumberCom- j pany, capitalized at $10,000,000. i The first named has been organized to handle oil produced in the Texas field, and is primarily intend ed as a competitor of the Standard | Oil Company, first in Texas and < | afterwards in the domestic and 1 1 export trade.
