THE LEDGER. I' Th irlow S. Carter, EDITOR A v D MANAGER. | J \j SATURDAY SKPTKMHKR I, 1000. ! 1 \ 1 " 1 Wc think Gov MeSweeney ha* I polled very near his full strength ' in the lirst primary and that he will wish after the second primary , tie had adopted u policy in enforce ( ing the dispensary law which ( would have made him fewer ^ friends in Charleston. His larire 1 vote there would seem to verify , the charges made against him by i Gurv, I'atterson and Whitman and ] which he answered by saying ho ( was doing the best he could for ' the Ian could not he enforced . there. Voters, elect a man Got- . crnor who says the law can lie en- ] forced there as well as in other J parts of the State, a man who only 1 received 577 votes out of a total of 4,004 in Charleston, a man who will neither feel nor he under i any obligations to a wliiakey seller < there?Col .las A lloyt. ( The consensus of opinion is that Col Hoyt's chances for election in ! the second primary are tine. The < large vote of McSweeney 2,917 to r>77 for Hoyt in Charleston, proves the assertions of Gary and Patterson from every stump in 1 the State that the Governor is not j enforcing the dispensary law there, j The I>uIk of the votes which they received were no doubt given them by men who knew the con- j dition of things in Charleston and were polled as a protest against McSweeney for his farcical pre* tension at enforcing the law. McSweeney has made friends in Charleston where 000 people are said to be openly selling whiskey i in violation of law, without fear of molestation, and is not the vote of Gary, Patterson and Whitman, j' who attacked the Governor's ad j ministration in severest language, I evidence that their vote is antago- | uistic to him. We do not see 1 how they can now rote for Mc* ' Sweeney when Col Hoyt is * pledged, in case the Legis'ature y does not eliminate the beverage ' feature of the dispensary law, to 1 enforce it in the city of Charles- , * ton just as it is enforced in the ^ '1 country towns of the State.
