to r>77 for Hoyt in Charleston,
proves the assertions of Gary and
Patterson from every stump in 1
the State that the Governor is not j
enforcing the dispensary law there, j
The I>uIk of the votes which they
received were no doubt given
them by men who knew the con- j
dition of things in Charleston and
were polled as a protest against
McSweeney for his farcical pre*
tension at enforcing the law.
McSweeney has made friends in
Charleston where 000 people are
said to be openly selling whiskey i
in violation of law, without fear
of molestation, and is not the vote
of Gary, Patterson and Whitman, j'
who attacked the Governor's ad j
ministration in severest language, I
evidence that their vote is antago- |
uistic to him. We do not see 1
how they can now rote for Mc* '
Sweeney when Col Hoyt is *
pledged, in case the Legis'ature y
does not eliminate the beverage '
feature of the dispensary law, to 1
enforce it in the city of Charles- , *
ton just as it is enforced in the ^

During an electiic storm last
Tuesday night a house belonging
to Mr .1 VV llivens, in the eastern
portion of the city was struck by
lightning and a part of the roof
was torn oil", the weather boarding
and ceiling splintered, and a
door torn to pieces. The house
is occupied by a colored family
and there were eight people in
the house when tho lightning
struck ""it. hut. severe as the
stroke was, none were injured. A
child was asleep very near a wall
