Farm work made rapid progress and was in the main devoted to cleaning staple crops of gia-.s and weeds, somewhat to the neglect of the less important crops. Much grass was killed, hut another full week of dry, hot weather is required to thoroughly rid the tields of weeds anil to put crops in good condition. The general c mdition of corn is improved, hut it is scalding on wet bottom lands and tiring on sandy lands to a considerable extent. C)i<i corn is being rapidly laid bv, while young corn is Nery grassy. Some overflowed bottoms being replanted to corn. The maturing portion of the crop needs ruin. Cotton fields that have heen cleaned of grass aru doing well, bnt many remain grassy on which cotton is turning yellow. Tho kot, dry weather was favorable to cotton, and in general this crop is decidedly better than it was last week. There is some complaint of rust and blight, the latter most severe on sea islan 1 varietv. The plants are growing too much to weeds m places, and in many in stances are not fruiting well. Two Students Drowned. ! i David Yotntin, a Persian, and j Fred Ilobbs, of Davidson, both medical students nt Davidson College, were drowned Wednesday afternoon in the Catawba river, at River Viow, near Davidson. The drowning occurred at a picnic given by the Presbyterian church of Davidson on the old Rivers' place, one mile below Beattic's Ford. The boys were in bathing. Good Crops of Wheat. Ben Tillman, Jr., Has Been Ordered to China, Charleston News and Courier. Within the next twenty lays another brave South Carolina soldier will be fighting upon Chinese soil. An order was recently issued moving one of the companies of the Seventh Infantry, of which Lieut. Ben Tillman, Jr., is ranking lieutenant, from Alaska to China. Lieutenant Tillman was graduated at the citadel Academy only a few years nan. Short I v nfinr , - J wards he was commissioned second lieutenant and fought through the Spanish war. When pence was declared the young officer was transferred to Alaska, and placed in charge of a company at a little town known as Kampwt city. lie has spent the last two years on the Yukon and the orders for a change came, no doubt, more as u relish than anything else.
