Important to Teachers Kjuieinber the teachers examination for school ceititicates comes off at this place next Friday. The following will interest all teachers: 'I he law forbids a contract with ' a teacher who does not hold a certificate to teach, issued within two years by the State board of-edtica I tion of the particular county in which the teacher is to be em _ ployed. A certificate expires in two years from the date of iasim 1U fore the expiration of this period J the old certificate may he renewed j hy the hoard that granted it, onl", I however, in case the holder at- j tended the summer school (if held in the county) or rendered to the State hoard of education an acceptable excuse for not having attended. It a certificate is not renewed within tho two years, its holder j is in no better position than one j never having held u certificate. "It would have been the irony of fate," says the Sumter Watchman, "had the Stale Democratic] lixcculive Committee ruled Col .1 \ 11 ?vt out of the primary. When the March convention nominated Tillman for governor, Col Hoyt, who was then chairman of the State Executive Committee, was appealed to by the regular Democrats to rule Tillman out of the primary as an independent, but he refused to do | so. Children's Day at Hopewell. Children's day was observed at Hopewell church last Sabbath. The attendance was very large, owing to the occasion and the pleasant, sunshiny weather. There were quite a number from a distance ; Lancaster and llcath Spring being well represented, as were all the adjoining communities. The exercises began at ten o'clock and continued until about i one. Law.son Elliott, a live-year old boy, gave the lirst recitation in bright and distinct words, impressing; us that now is the time to do a thing, and not to delay. Following this was a number of impressive and uplifting recica- j lions interspersed wita beautiful | and stirring songs, which were ! highly enjoyed by all. Kev Mr Ik* lenbaugh was next called upon, who entered the pulpit and gave us an unusually good sermon, which was attentively listened to by his numerous friends, he having been our former pastor. After an appropriate song by , the school the benediction was pronounced by the Kev Mr Keden- j baugh which closed the exercises of the occasion. The pleasant smile seen on all the faces told how well they had enjoyod the exercises, and seemed to say we aro glad we went out to the house of the Lord. A Sunday School Scholar. City on The Sand. Interesting Letter From One of Our Soldier Hoys in the Phil ippines. 0 Dkau Mk Editor:?ThislenYes me very \vellv and hoping the good people of old Lancaster ate enjoying the blessing of health. Wo landed here Dec. 28th, and the following day we hiked across the ' rice iields, a distance of two J miles, sinking above our knees in The mud at every step Our Captaiu swamped up, stuck fast, and wo had to pull him out. At noon wo stopped tor dinner, which consisted of hard tack and a hit of salmon.. Wo were the most fo ?ged crowd you ever saw and after resting there until night we struck camp. We guarded the water works there for a month hut never got sight of the enemy. Then wo were sent to Manila where we remained a week awaiting orders. Orders finally eamc on a Sunday morning for the removal of the 2d Battalion to Legaspi in the' Southern part of Luzon Island, I and heing packed and jammed in an old freight hoat wo made the' trip in three days, landing during the heaviest kind of a rain, j We had been sent there to reinforce the 4 7th Regiment and 'hev were glad to welcome us. The enemy had horned two towns on them the night before we landed and had made an unsuccessful attempt to hurt) a church in width a company of U S troops was quartered. This first night after we landed the outposts kept up a tiring all night long. 1 will never forget the night. I wont on duty between 10 and 12 o'clock and it was a dungerous post. It was dark and raining very hard when I saw a Filipino sneaking up to l>olo me. 1 raised my gun and tired at lmn but lie got away. On the morning of the 14t^i pf February we hiked into the mountains in pursuit of the enemy. At 1 o'clock we halted, ate our dinner which consisted of hard tack and water, and were resting awhile when hot tiring begun about two miles iu our front. Four companies were double- j quickcd up there and found a company of the 47th liegt, almost surrounded by the enoiny. We threw a skirmish lint across the river, tho men in water up to their waists :in<t lux'tin \-*?ll???? , ... ."IIC) UllU^ which was kept up for nhout two hours heforo the enemv retreated. They were entrenched And wo wero in the open. The bullets i . ' I wero passing like rain over our | heads but we wore so tired wo I didn't care what became of us. I know that was my feeling and it is the feeling of all soldiers. In this engagenuv t we only lost one man and none were wounded, while we know of Sf> of the enemy killed hut eunnot tell how many weie wounded for they usually drag tlio wounded oir. V \lo?.t. Wo remained at Lcgaspi six weeks when wo sailed for Munandall Island, (>00 miles from Manila, where no Americans had ever landod. Wo were two weeks making the trip. The Negroes put up the white tl ig as soon as wo'landed and we occupied the towns. Wo had two gun boats with us and immediately we went into the Inwn lK? <*nn ??? ? ? ? v??v ^iiu ijxjmv would fire 20 big cannons for a salute. A.fter we had been here a weok, while hoys were lined up for breakfast the negroes sneaked on one of the outposts acd l>oloed throe men to pieces, then atiAclred the town. We had one man wounded while the enemy lost 100 killed and a large number wounded. We stacked the dead in one 1 pile. The bolo ih about four feet long, made of the finest steel and as sharp as a razor. Wo have to stand guard evory third day and work two days. It looked for awhile as if they would perish us to death but we fare better no.v. However, sol diet ing in the Philippines is not like in America. Nearly onefourth of the men are sick, hardly ! nhle for duty. The days hero are very hot and the nights are cold. Some of the hoys are had home sick hut 1 am not. I think we will he sent hack home in August, i I have seen lots since I left old j Lancaster hut I have paid for it. t All can re-enlist who want to, hut | for my part 1 have hail enough of it. it has learned all of us something, so if I ever get tiack to old S uth Carolina I will stay. Wrangle Over a Big Dry Good a Stock? That Hock Hill Bank? Political Bo tee. Cor. of the Daily News. Yorkville, June 7?Lawyers from Charleston, Lancaster and several members of the local bar have been engaged for several ~ o days in a contest over u part of the assets of the Ganson Dry Goods company, which went into oanicrupicy ni this place about two months ago. The liabilities of the concern were about $25,000 and the receiver has already paid the creditors 30 cents on the dollar, and thinks he will be able to pay at least 20 per cent, more if tho available assets arc not wrangled over by the lawyers until nothing is left. * It is said that the Merchants and Farmers bank at Kock Hill, which closed its doors several months ago and which at tho time promised to pay 100 cents on tho dollar, will not pay over one-fourth of the amount promised. Representative Finley and family are expected to return to Yorkville during the next few days. It is said that Mr. Fir ley will during the present summer erect a large and handsome residence on his lot on North Congress street. It is generally conceded that he trill he . re-elected to represent the Fifth district with practically no opposition.
