I'ONTINl'Kl) FROM FIRST l'AOR. es, and ho declared that far within the truth to say that $ 1, 000,0(10 would pay for all tho liq nor smuggled into Maine and sold in violation of tho law. This is tho testimony of a man who spent tho host years of his life, even d >wn to extreme old age, in ad vocnting a cause that he know was hot eticial in a moral, religious, industrial and financial sense. A whole generation has grown up there without being witnesses to the effects of liquor, anil there are grown men and women who have never seen a drunken man. Is not such a stato of affairs worth strivimr for. pven tlimiMi tlin ?f ' n" ""v fainment of such a result involves sacrifice, toil and endurance on the part of its advocates? * Christian men and women can well afford to make the sacrifice and hear the toil, because it is in the direct line of obedience to their Master. "The congest wo are entering upon is not child's play. The prohibition Democrats of South Carolina are not responsible that the issue has to bo made on the political hustings. There is no choice left to us except to abandon the field, wherein we would prove recreant to tho most solemn obligations that rest upon a Christian people, charged with tho moral und religious elevation of those around us. To relinquish the ticM meant) the continuation of the liquor tradic under the aegis of our beloved South Carolina, and perpetuates a system that is undermining the public weal and destroying the probity of our public nen, a system that sane lions with the broad seal of the State an annulment of the divine injunction, 'won unto him that gives his neighbor drink, * * * and makest him drunken also.' Kvcrv flliv Uiwl PVPPI hnnp ? -"j ?jy ^,v,v MVM4 through the day, the State of South Carolina is vending thut which destroys the souls of men? and the servants of God cannot remain indifferent or unconcerned while this law is continued in the statute hooks. 'Righteousness exulteth a nution, hut sin is a reproach to any people,' and the hideous enormity of this sin of drunkenness fostered hy the State must not longer stain the proud escutcheon of our common mother. We must protest against this anomalous perversion of gov ernmental power hy which every citizen of the State is made responsible for a tratlic that is ahominah|e in the eyes ot God. The means of our protest is through the political agency with which we are in part entrusted as citizens of South Carolina and we come now to make an appeal to our fellow ci'izens tha* they will itiiti us in restoring the nlit onm. monwealth to a rigfit relation whereby tho liquor t radio will he put under ^an, so that our rulers and lawmakers will ho spared tho necessity of legislature to increase the sin of drunkenness within our borders. To do this effectually we are compelled to make this ixsue at the Democratic primary, and hence to have representatives of our principles who will contend for them liefore tho people, and k?ck to omain control ot the ox ocutive and legislative department* of the State government.' Thin ia no unworthy aim or object and we proclaim these purposes, which are not hid in a corner to our political associates, demand* ing the right to make the issue at the primary polls, and insisting that fairness and justice requires the recognition of our represen* tatives inside the party lines, where eveiy other issue is settled for the maintenance of good gov* I ernraent in ihis State. We deny that any class of Democrats have jieculiar and special privileges accorded to them under the constitution and laws of tto party, and will maintain our right to I c hoard on the hustings and to cast % a free, untraninieled ballot at the, polls." rtWUIll UKUAM/.LNU 1U HOLD COTTON CROP. Hankers Will lie Conferred Withj j ns to Arrangements for Loans on Cotton in Storage. I Macon, Ga., May '20 ? A large number of delegates composing the executive and business com i mittees appointed at the State convention of the Georgia Cotton i Growers' Protective association held nt Macon, May 21, met today in conference at the chain her ' of commerce rooms in this city. 1 The committees were clothed with full power to outline and adopt plans for the future wo k of the i association hum 10 place i no niove1 inent en an active business footing. Tlio plan of organization l and meibod of carrying on the ; work, together with constitution and by laws for government of the association, submitted by President C Harvie Jordan, were adopted after lengthy discussion of several plans submitted along the same lino. Active steps will be at once taken to secure local organizations in every cotton growing county in the State, i The president was authorized to proceed, by correspondence with head officials in other States, to secure the organization ? f the entire cotton belt by the middle of August. Other Statos will be asked to unite with Georgia in the movement and establish a central bureau in this State, which will exorcise a general superintendence over all tho different State bureaus. A committee of tivo members of the executive committee with President Jordan as chairman was appointed to ton er with the State Bankers association, which meets at Lithia Springs, June 13, to secure the formation of a plan on the part of State banks for meet1 ing tho demand of tho producers I ntxt season in regard to loans on i _ " cotton in storage.' The movement of tho cotton growers to perfect a plau by which the cotton crop of the south can bo marketed during ti longer period of time, thereby forcing a | belter price for the raw material i before the staple leaves tho farm* i or\? hands is creating great enthusiasm throughout the cotton 1 belt. The plans adopted today arc considered feasible, practical and capable of accomplishment by the bankers and business men gonerady. Other States in the cotton belt have been already heard from, giving Assurances of hearty co operation in the move j mont, and preparations are now being made for calling conventions and perfecting a system of organization similar to the one in Georgia.
