Last week was recorded the failure of the Commercial and Farmers' Hunk of Rock Hill, and this week wo have to record the failure of the big Ganson Dry Goods Company, of Yorkville. Under an order signed by Judge Benct, at Camden, last Saturday, the affairs of this last named con* cern were put in chargo of Mr. B N Moore a* temporary receiver. The failure of the Ganson Dry Goods Company is due primarily to the crop failure of last fall, reduced cash sales and poor collections. This is from the best in 'or mat ion obtainable; but the srisis was precipitated by the ail 11 ro of the Commercial and Maimers* Bank. So it wppears r(>m such facta as the reporter ias been able to gather through lie most diligent effort. Tke complaint upon which the eeoivoi ship order was signed was undo by the Charlotte Clothing Jompany, through Thomas F. ! Vic Dow, Esq, attorney, and im? liediately upon the tiling of the mpers in this case, Major .Fames F dart, representing the leceiver >f the Commercial and Farmers' Ihink and othor claimants, served lotice on Temporary Receiver Moore to appear before Judge jage, at Chester, tomorrow ? Phursday?to show cnuso whv a ;o?receiver should not he appointed. Afterward, a newnotiee was served fixing the return date on Eiiday and indicating a direct apdicatioL for the appointment of a receiver the same as if -there had tieen no previous proceedings. It will he, therefore, several days yet, prohahlv, before the exact status of the receivership is set Lied. Tho reporter called upon Mr M F Jones, prosit ent of the (ianson Dry Goods Company, on Monday :<? see whether he had anything to jive out in connection with the receivership pioccedings. Mr lonus repliot' that his business was in the hands of the court, and ilthough ho was still doing what ic could ro got its affairs straightened out, he did not feel warrant- | f?d in making any statement. It j would he better, he thought, to leave all statements to the re- I r*eiver. as the renresontnti ve of' - o -- I the court. Mr Moore, the temporary receiver, did not care to ?ay anything at this time. In view of (lie notices that had been served upon hi:n, looking to the appointment of a co receiver, etc, he thought it would he netter for -Heath i - Open Which Took Ph Su ? There ate, of con rue, numerous rumors afloat as to liabilities and assets of the Hanson Dry G? ods j Company; but none of these) rumors are to be taken as authen- I tic. It is a fact, however, that 1 the stock of goods on hand -in the store aggregates a nominal value of somewhere between $15,000 nnd $20,000, and there are on the ! books many uncollected accounts, aggregating quite a large sum. The papers tiled by Major ?T mes F Hart, as attorney for the re- ' I ceiver of the Commercial and ! Farmers' Hank of Iiock Hill and j others, enumerate two unpaid , notes to the bank; one for $4,000 ; and one for $2,500 with attorneys j fees; and it is the general under ; standing that these papers were the cause of the trouble. With the bank carrying these papers as it had agreed to do, the Hanson i Dry Goods Company had reason to believe it wnnld tie utile take cure of nil smaller claims and successfully weuiher the crisis that hud been made so severe by Inst year's crop failures. The failure .of the bunk, however, made necessary the immediate collection of the past due notes. There was not time in which to provide for these notes otherwise, and the closing down of numerous creditors quickly brought about the present situation. The failure of the Gnnson Dry i Goods Company, the largest concern of the kind that has ever ex i-ted in Yorkville, is especially regretable. There is not only much sympathy to- Mr Jones, who was the owner of the niujoiity of stock, and for his especially clever corps of clerks, who will l.e thrown out of employment; hut there is a general appreciation of die injury that will be su>tained by the to*, a in a business sense This, there need l?e no attempt to deny, is quite .severe. bankings ing XJp Ov ice at Lancaster in Interesting lv tfltfilir < tfwl lis V l V ^ - * rn ^^ ?i ir "* w m W a k V Storekeepers a arti really cheap " are sure to (iiu 1Mwith spec 1 t?A?m ?\.?4 A . ... t . r.?/l I - J \JX JW*|I |MM M'lUl^r ill** |im MH'li l?\ ; Jiro <?ii an extensive scale.
