The loss is fl human life, and property aggregating about $1(5,000. The fin when discovered bad partiilh consumed a box car loaded wit! cotton and spread to the cotton or a platform adjacent. When tb< flames were finally subdued 40( bales of cotton, the depot of th< S C & G extension and its con rents, two loaded box cars, ant several warehouses filled with cotton seed had been consumed. The losses are pretty general!) covered by insurance. All of th< cotton lost belonged to the Lan caster Mercantile Co. The oiigin of the fire is nol known, hut it is supposed thai the unfortunate man whose charred remains were found in the debrit the following day, and who wut known to have taken lodging in the car loaded with cotton the night before, struck a match for some purpose during the nighl and accidentally set tire to the cotton. Another theory is that tho cotton was sot afire by spark? from the engine of the freight train which passed down that night. The unfortunate man, wf learn, was Bates Suttle, of Shelby, N C. He was a surveyor and was employed on tho new railroad being built from Cheraw to Camden. He reached Heath Spring shortly before Sundown and applied at several residences for lodging but was refused because he wasintoxi cated.
