They hare already a good portion of the line in operation and pet many words of praise and admiration for their ingenuity and r in by observers of this unique line. Van Wyck has had a lively time in tiie cotton business this week. Tuesday and Wednesday were real cotton days. About 200 bales were sold these days. Greenville, Dec 5.?J B Coinwell, State constable, and As.ist ant Cooley today found in the suburbs of this city a blind tiger, run in wagons by George How ard and an assistant whose name is not known, and proceeded to arrest the same Howard and his assistant are residents of the "Dark Corner," a famous illicit distillery portion of Greenville county, that boasts of never be ing raided by n revenue officer who escaped alive. When the deputies opened tire, it was returned by tne desperadoes. .1 B Cornwell is shot in three places and is mortally wounded, being shot through the bowels and in the shoulders and thigh. Or T T Karle, his attend ing physician, has given up all hope of recovery and his death ia expected at any moment. Assistant Cooley is also seriously shot in the back and wrist. Blockader Howard, who is a crip pie, is shot in rive places and is expected to die at any moment. ! Ho is at his home at Poe's Mill. His assistant escaped without in jury. It is reported that ths ' whole of the "Dark Corner" is up in arms and declare that no revenue officer shall enter their district. There is a great ileal of feeling over the affair and further trouble may be looked for on the death of Constable Cornwell. Howard is a relattve of "Little Bill" Howard, who, under sentence of death, escaped from jail in his wife's clothes. CORNWELL AND HOWARD IIOTH 8UCCUMil TO THEIR WOUNDS. V Special to The State. Greenville, Dec 7.?State Con stable John Bennett Cornwell died at 2 o'clock this morning. He was only partially conscious during yesterday and last night, being kept under the influence of opiates. He recognized his mother and other members of the family, who came in yesterday. The body was taken in charge by Undertaker Mackey. Coroner VVilbanks organized a jury and the body was viewed and the physicians' testimony taken. The inquest was concluded, this afternoon, "lien Cooley's deposition was secured. The body was sent to Chester by way of Laurens at 12 o'clock today. The mother and wife of the young man and two sisters, Misses Kate and M L Cornwell Sheriff J B Cornwell, T J Cornwell and Col J T Cunningham composed the funeral party. George Howard, tlie second victim of Tuesday's fight, died ?at 3:30 today. He made no sworn statement. Cooley testified that he fired the shot that killed How. ard Cooley's testimony before the coroner was important. Cooley's condition is somewhat dangerous. Last Sunday morning a building on Mr Wade H Hicklin's place near Guthriesville, was dis covered to lie afire. The building was occupied by Mr Hicklin's cook, who has two young children The woman hud left the children in the house and when tho fire was discovered she was in Mr Hicklin's residence, about 40 feet distant. She ran as fast as post sible to her home and succeeded in rescuing her youngest child. Mr llickhn also ran to the burning building and entered to secure the other child, which ho succeed ed in doing with difficulty.
