l'HB LEDGER. Thurlow S- Carter EDITOR AND MANAGER. WKDNKSDAY, JINK 28, 1899. [ For The Ledger VAN WYCK ITEMS. Crops are growing nicely, bu need some more rain. Hot to i: lands have not bad a season sine the early part of April. Late cor is coming up slowly and withou rain will hardly come up to stand. jsuihII grain is about al harvested and housed. Owing t? the dry weather, very few pea have been sowed or planted, bu there is time yet for this im portant crop and should we hav rain soon, there will be a larg crop put in, both for forage an? fertilizing purposes. Farmers can not grow to much of this valuabl< crop.. Messrs .1 A Hyutt and C VA McGuirt have moved their sav mill to Mr. J L Rodman's Robin son place on Twelve Mile creek They expect to cut large quantitie: of lumber tbcro thissumnier. Pic-nickers from NVaxhaw wen joined by a few Van Wyck friendi in a pic nic Thursday on Dr. .1 Douglas Nisbct's farm near Indiar Ferry on Catawba river. The} spent a pleasant day, and sonieol the beaux and belles will remembei t ie day at* oasis in life's desert memory. M iss Lillian Jordan, who ha; been dangerously i'l at Mr. K H Massey's since last Saturday, i; rapidly convalescing. She wai attended by I)ra. J Douglas Nibbet and Houston. Miss Annie Yoder who hat been visiting her brother J M Yoder, returned to dier homo ai Yoder, N. C., last Thursday She was accompanied by Master: Clyde and Cecil Yoder who wil spend some time with their Grandfather in Western North Caroli na. Mr. and Mrs. .1 W Hates, returned to Van Wyck last Friday after a ten days visit to St. Mathews, Columbia and othoi places. Mr. E H Mobley has had a tint bored well sunk on his farm. The depth of it is one Hundred ami forty-fear feet. Last fall he had two attempts made to get watei but had to give up after boring one hundred and twenty-sever feet deep. Stopping on rock The one uist. finished is n/o f... J --- ,w ',wv 1,,t from the ones that failed, and was bored forty or more feet through rock. The work was done by Creighton and Martin of Rock Hill who understand their business. Cedar (lump, Woodmen of the world, introduced a new member into the mystery of Woodcraft at its regular meeting last Thursday night. This camp is growing and expects a number of new members this summer. The Woodmen pic nic planned for duly 4th has been put off until sometime in August. Oitimis. ?Those who calculated that there would bo no bugs and worms to molest the crops this year, owing to last winter's cold, were badly mistaken. These pests seem to be unusually numerous. It has been suggested that their cnnillicx tlin Kir/lu Duff,?.1 L ?., ..uuu, .uMiciru III (It'll worse than they did. A farmer wno was in tho Lantern office Wednesday, when these destroyers of crops were mentioned, made a single remark, and it was significant?4'There are no birds." Spare the birds. The little harm they do to crops is nothing com pared to the damage they provent. ?Chester Lantern. t^"Sahscribe to The Lf.dok [For The Ledger. The Entertainment at Oakhurst. i i ? " The entertainment at the acade- i my on last Friday night was quite a success. We had no idea that there was such talent among the young people. The first thing on the program was a recitation, "The two Thanksgiving Dances," by Miss Alma t Beat tie. It was beautifully rendern ed and well received by the aue dience. The first play "ltuined n by Drink was exceptionally good t and well rendered. In it was a portrayed the downfall of a II wealthy merchant caused by man's :> worst enemy?whiskey. Ilappis ness and plenty was supplsntcd 11 bv misery and poverty. 4'Dr. Cure All" was also excele lent and well rendered. Dr. Curee All accomplished some marvelous I cures. Makirg the short tall; the - bashful bold; changing black hair o to snow white inside of a month ; relieving the stout of a superfluity of flesh and vice versa, k' The drills? The Fan and Tain bourine?by twelve young ladies . wore a credit to them as well as s their instructor, Mrs. Lewis Rollings. Never were seen so many 3 pretty girls on the stage at one 3 time. Oakhurst can boast of ' pretty girls if nothing else. Dur> ing and after the exorcises refreshments were served, f Al>out $20. were realized which will be applied to the new Meth odist church of Heath Spring. Take it all round it was as good i an entertainment as we have uG 1 tended in a long time. We can 3 not see how the participants can 3 afford to give anything so good for the uu ney. It is reported that the same '4 pi ay" will be 3 given at Kershaw, if so, we ad 1 vise all who can to attend, assort t ing them of receiving the full . value of their money. One of the s attractions of the evening was I the music furnished by Messrs. - Powers, Turner and Beattie A VISITOR. ?Gen Wheeler might be nn improvement on Uen Otis in whipping the Philipinos, hut ho nor any other commander will accomplinh much without more private Holdiera.
