Lieutenant Colonel Tillman, at the sacrifice of his friendly relations with his fellow otlicers, became the champion of the privates and pressed for the disbandmeut of the regiment. Senator Tillman took up tho cause of j his nephew and worked for disbandment. The war department acquiesced and the regiment was ordered to be mustered out. Day before yesterday Lieuten ant Colonel Tillman was promoted to the colonelcy of tho regiment, a post made vacant bv tho death of the lamented Alston; and immediately there followed his reconciliation with the ofticors with whom he had been so lately at W:ir unit 1 bo cnni'itnu I" '? ' '11 were withdrawn. 'I'ho same evening the officers determined to seek to have the regiment retained in the service, and yesterday a dele nation of them apparently with the approval of Col. Tillman, made a pilgrimage to Senator Tillman's homo, to enlist his efforts in seeming the retention of the regiment. Senator Tillman expressed his willingness to do so hut with the understanding that the men would not ho compelled to stay in tho service against their will. This is a curious twist, and it deserves and will doubtless command the interested scrutiny of tho public eye. VVe wait to see who will champion the cause of tho nnnr nri vates, who had such influential friends at court before Lieutenant Colonel Tillman became colonel.?The State.
