Marshal Killed by n Negro, Who was Afterwards Pursued and Captured. j Charlotte Observer, 8th inst. ^ News reached here last night of e a tragedy in Chester, S C., yes terday. A negro named Tom ^ .lones, alias Anderson, presented a check at the Exchange Hank there J purpoiting to have been signed by ^ Mrs Gaston, a lady of that city , The cashier did not believe the p signature to be genuine and telephoned Mrs Gaston about it. She answered that the check had not been signed by her, and that it of " course should not be honored. | > The negro when confronted with j' this statement, said that he could 11 take any one to Mrs. Gaston's house and prove that she had giv ed him tho check. The cashier I' decided to send him in charge of 1 ('apt. .1 K Marshal of the Chester ^ police force. c When in the vicinity of Mrs Gaston's residence, Capt. Marshal turned away from the negro to n speak to a little girl, who was T passing by. The negro seized the c, moment, and, drawing his pistol, s shot Capt Marshal, killing him in c stantly. t Mr Robert Caldwell, who was 1 near by, ran to learn the cause of 1 the shooting, and discovered Capt i Marshal dead on the street, while the negro was running for his life. fe b a Caldwell snatched the dead man's ? e pistol from his pocke% and shot twice at the negro, but missed him. The murderer turned and returned the fire, shooting twice. Mr Caldwell saved himself by get- ^ ' ting behind a tree. - Chief of Police Morgan then orgam zed a posse, and, by the aid f of blood hounds, they overtook the negro near I^ewis'. The mur c darer came very near killing Mr c Alex Love, firing two shots at him, when ho was first brought ? e n to bay. These shots exhausted j f.hn nPnrrnA'c 1? .. ?" f, then threw his pistol at l?ve, who hot him twice and captured him. An angry crowd threatened R( lynching an the negro was being l taken into the jail yard. To their pi threats ho is said to have replied u< impudently: 4'You can kill me, but you can't oat mew" , The city is greatly excited and the local military company wu guarding tho jail last night. ^ Opening of Registration Dooka W d< Notice is hereby given that, in ^ accordance with the Act 6f 1896 providing for the registration of electors, the books of registration will be opened on tho first Monday of each month, at the court A. hcuae, for the registration of electors entitled to registration under the constitution, and kept open for three successive days in each month, until thirty days be fore the general election in 1898. ^ Electors who registered on or 1*v. Governor Ellerbeand ir Archer have announced their latforms. Nothing of this kind as yet come from Col Watson or lr Schumpert. At this stage it [>oks very much as if the race is oing to bo a lively one if all the undidates stay to the finish. The positive announcement was', lso made yesterday of the candi lacy of Mayor 11 II Evans of, dewberry for the office of attorley general. His friends claim hat ho will make it lively for any ithcrs who enter the race. And still another announcement: tas been made. Col Thomas G i ?Vhite of Beaufort is out for sup-' irintendent of education. "UNCLE UKORUE" ALSO. It seems that there is no longer .uv (-ionDi nut mat licorge I) fillman will he in the race for governor. It was positively tated on the street yesterday, by no who is in position to know, hat Col George Tillman has finaly consented to re-enter polities. Che following was also given out n regard to Col Tillman's plans: He will not make the race on ,r ar ti-dispensary platform, howvcr, as has heretofore been re>orted. His position on the vhiskev question will be to allow ach county to select for itself uohibition, high license, or the li*l>ensary, as each sees fit, this, n his judgment being true local elf-government and one of the undamental principles of Demoracy. He will also advocate a hange in the present system of ounty government and make a otermined fight for the lietter lent of the public school system, le will run as a candidate of no letion, but with the hope that he lay be able to reunite the Denio acy of South Carolina. He will r>t only promise to reduce taxes, lit will reduce them. The peole are groaning under this buran. For a long time Col Tillman has ssitated to allow the use of his . % ? * I ime, but it is nai;l that the petions and letters from all parts f the State which have lieen sent iking him to make the race have sfinitely and finally caused him i decide to do so.
