Mr. Campbell, of Ohio, said that when the House was organized he was, very unexpectedly to himself, appointed to the distinguished position of Chairman of the Committee of Ways and Means, and yesterday a distinction was .-onferred on h:m by she Chair, at eiiu.JU unexpected as the former. Rinding that the latter position involves very arduous and important duties entirely iuoMnyatihlo with the duties assigned when the House organized, he would ask the House to excuse him from serving as the head of the commission to proceed to Kansas to take testimony, lie expressed liis gratitude for those two very high honors conferred on him, especially the latter, Iwcause of the peculiar circumstances at this time surrounding him.
