Haven's letters to his Son, published in Life IlluslrtUeJ:] If you have a place for everything, and keep it in its place, it you have a time to do business, and do it in its time, you will Hnil !>..? ...:n . ..... ...... jyju .tin unvu uumiicbs instead of business driving you, and so will have leisure instead of constant worry. It paius mc to see some men undertake any business of moment. They are as sure to beeomu H_ entangled, and thrown on their backs, their business a-top of them, as they are to undertake it. Take farming, for instance.? Now I venture the assertion that two thirds of all the farmers in this State nre burning ? ) green wood this terrible cold weather. (Jo into their - houses and you hear the siting of the beech, or maple, or elm, as like to the death dirge of n cockroach as can be. Out of the chimney top comes forth sinoko dark as Tartarus, and their wives and hired girls are cross as bedlam. These men could not havo time to cut their wood nnd have it seasoned. Now I charge it on you tlint you fail not to have time to do ail that you undertake?in order. Every day accidents, casualties, catastrophes, providences arc taking place, because men. women and children havo not time to do things as they ought to be done. I m ist tell yo.? a story which is a fact. When I was a boy, there lived in my native village a fuuily by the name of Wilson. Thero were four boys and four girls, nnd they were exceedingly gifted. Not one of them was there, who did not rank in beauty intellect nnd personal physical power a good way nbove medior?u 11 l.j nijr. j iicjr mi una more man common educational requirement!*, for they learned easily. The girl* nil murried early, and to young men of high proiuire. Tho men all married, and to respectable women. Yet all remained poor, their failure wan directly attributable to a want of order. Not one of them was ever known to do a thing in its place?with ono exception, and he is tho hero of my story. Of ono of the girls I may truthfully sny, that for thirty-five years she has never aocn the sunrise, always going to bed past midnight and rising past midday. But to iny story. Erastu* Wilson wm n farmer?a shiftless, slovenly, disorderly slip-shod farmer. The winds nnd the | waters, the sun and the rain, darkness and | broad day, all conspired to do him harm.? I IHs gates were unhung his hogs noses were ! nnwrung, his sheep could leap his fences ' liko wild deer, his cattle were seen with ; boards over their eyes, great spiked chains on their necks, yokes on, "and tied head , and foot." His horses were as thin as a Rhode Island spare rib?you could sue sunrise through them. His windows had old hate, old coats, old nows pap crs. shingles in- j stead of glass. His corn wns stunted, his j meadows half covered with grass, and a? round and about hitn the (spirit of dee.nv I seemed to brood*- Yet he worked hard, did Mi drink, nor gamble, nor quarrel. In fact he Wso a pious man, but he did everything at the wrong time and in the wrong way. Thus hs lived until his hnir turned gray, and poverty sat at his table an acknowledged member of bis family. One cold December day ho was going to his barn, and it hnp- | period that he lifted up his eyes, and alar off in one of his Iota he enw something to him ' like deer horns sticking through the top of | a mow-drift. He ww *11 alive. He would maheaconqeeot, eo over the fence he leaped end Made for (he deer, fie waded the drifted eed undrifted enow, till he reached the apot, when, behold! instead of the horn* of a b?ek, there etook UP the two handle* of hi* plot*! Me wee eery angry, and started m to go back, when he heard a voice ae audibly as Srer a roioe spake, aay, "Eftatoe WilMittMW deeerve a good flogging for )en^H|Mow out in the enow. It ie kf ?uoh ftfMleeeneea yon bare come to 4 , MkL - poverty. I'ick up your plow aud take it t the ham." He immediately sot about it, and by wh? means he did it he never could tell. Bi through that deep snow and over the drift ho dragged the implcmunt to the barn.Once there bo took a raw hide, atrippe himself, naked.and addressed himself: "Erastus WiLon, you are a mean, dirt; poverty-stricken man. All your long lif you have been too lazy to save what yo have earned, or t--o careless to do it. Yo deserve a flogging. Here is your plo' whose handles you could never sec, till yo thought theiu the horns of a deer, then yo could wade drifts waist deep to get them.Yon deserve a good flogging, you careles blockhead, and you shall have it," and li laid the raw hide ou to his body, legs an feet, till he raised great wales, skippin round the floor and screaming, while h would say, "Iamivo your plow out, will yoi I'retty farmer you are, ain't you? I'll see I can't teach you better." Thus lie flogge himself most soundly, dressed himself an went in. From that flogging he earne fort a changed man. lie was prompt, orderl; saving, and up with the times. His neigl bors were surprised. His family were woi der-struck. He began to thrive and in le? than three years his farm, his flocks up herds all bore the evidence of being und< the guidance of a spirit whose energies wci ot the am pi st order.
